ياO رُبَّmany a قَطرٍraindrop جامِدٍfrozen حَلّىadorned بِهِwith it
يا رُبَّ قَطرٍ جامِدٍ حَلّى بِهِ

Ah, many a frozen drop with which was adorned
O Lord of frozen drops that adorned

Frozen water from it pelted the gravelly streambeds;
The rocks with ice, coating the land

With piercing, raging punishment unfurled
فَالأَرضُso the earth تَضحَكُlaughs عَنrevealing قَلائِدِnecklaces أَنجُمٍstars

نُثِرَتwere scattered بِهاupon it وَالجَوُّand the sky جَهمٌgrim قاطِبُfrowning
نُثِرَت بِها وَالجَوُّ جَهمٌ قاطِبُ
So the earth laughs, revealing necklaces of stars
The ground now smiles with necklaces of stars
strewn upon it, while the sky is grim and frowning.
Scattered above while gray skies reign overall
فَكَأَنَّماso it is as though زَنَتِcommitted adultery البَسيطَةُthe earth تَحتَهُbeneath it
فَكَأَنَّما زَنَتِ البَسيطَةُ تَحتَهُ
فَأَكَبَّand so it bent down يَرجُمُهاstones her الغَمامُthe cloud الحاصِبُstone-hurling
فَأَكَبَّ يَرجُمُها الغَمامُ الحاصِبُ
So it is as though the earth had committed adultery beneath it,
As though the ground had sinned and was now pelted
and so the stone-hurling cloud bent down to stone her.
