أَلاAh! رُبَّmany a يَومٍday حَثَّتِhastened الكاسُthe cup خَطوَهُits pace
فَطارَso it flew by وَأَيّامُand the days السُرورِof joy قِصارُare short
Ah, many a day—the cup hastened its pace,
Alas, many a day when the cup hastened his steps
So it flew by, and days of joy are short.
And sped away, and the days of joy are few,
عَثَرتُI stumbled بِذَيلِover the hem of السُكرِdrunkenness فيهِin it (that day) عَشِيَّةًone evening
وَلِلريحِand for the wind فيin مَوجِthe waves of الخَليجِthe gulf عِثارُstumbling
At evening that day, I stumbled over drunkenness's hem,
At eve I stumbled in the skirt of drunkenness
While the wind stumbled in the gulf's waves.
And the wind in the wave of the gulf had a mind to sink me;
وَقَدand already فَضَّضَsilvered النُوّارُthe blossoms كُلَّevery رَباوَةٍhillock
وَسالَand flowed عَلَيهاover it لِلأَصيلِof the late afternoon نُضارُpure gold
And the blossoms had silvered every hillock,
But the butler opened all the bottles he had,
And the late afternoon's pure gold flowed over it.
And poured for the family of origin a sparkling wine.
