وَقَد قَلَّصَ الصُبحُ ذَيلَ الغَلَس
Ah, by the bending of the fig-tree boughs,
The branches of the palm tree stir and sway
And dawn had drawn back the hem of darkness,
As the dawn shortens the train of darkness.

كَما سالَ ريقُ حَبيبٍ نَعَس
And it bent, its honeyed fruit flowing,
The ripe dates begin to fall and spill their juice
As flowed the saliva of a beloved who dozed.
Like the drooling of a sleepy loved one.

Indeed, it offered something lovely to behold,
This exquisite, sweet harvest has brought
Delicious in fruit and sweet of breath.
A pleasurable scent to the garden's breath.

وَأَحبَبتُ فيهِ سَوادَ اللَعَس
So I was smitten with it for the whiteness of its teeth,
I deduced its ripeness from the whiteness of the spathes
And loved in it the dark hue of dusky lips.
And grew fond of its blackened dates.
