    وَنفضَةُ حُمّى تَعتَريني فَأَرقُصُ

    Ah, age advances, and I diminish;

    And a fever's shudder seizes me, so I dance.

    So here I am, erasing my misdeeds with my tears,

    And I look into what I have done, scrutinizing it.

    وَيُعمى عَلَيَّ الأَمرُ طَوراً فَأَفحَصُ

    And I glimpse the outcomes of things and take heed;

    And at times the matter is hidden from me, so I investigate.

    And oh, how many a train of youth I trailed,

    And I did not know that it would be shortened.

    And many a fleeting moment of life, between a brimming cup

    Passed around, and a gazelle hunting at al-Liwa.

    فَيالَيتَ ذاكَ العَيشَ لَو كانَ يَنكُصُ

    Ah, gone is a life once dewy with abundance;

    Oh, if only that life could return!

    أَلا إِنَّها الأَعلاقُ تَغلو وَتَرخُصُ

    And gone is youth's glory, once held cheap for a time;

    Ah, such are precious things: their value rises and falls.

    Who, then, will bear a greeting to those nights,

    Embracing them all at times, at times singling some out?

    وَلا بَردُ تِلكَ الريحِ يَسري وَيَخلُصُ

    At a time when that cloud no longer shades me,

    Nor does that wind's coolness steal through and reach me;

    أُقَلِّبُ فيها ناظِري أَتَخَرَّصُ

    And the white stars of gray hair have now risen;

    I turn my gaze among them, conjecturing,

    As though I had not kissed the sun's cheek one night,

    Nor had my foot's arch worn the sun as a sandal beneath her,

    Nor had I spent a night beloved, my ribs borne aloft

    By a sandgrouse with a nesting hollow between my ribs.
