Your endeavors cannot be counted and thus encompassed by enumeration.
Your efforts are uncountable, so they cannot be grasped by counting
And your glory will not consent to stop at any limit.
And your glory does not satisfy standing at the limit

The attributes did not fall short with you out of intent
But they overreached, and so strayed beyond the proper measure.
But they went beyond, yes beyond, the aim

That carried the palm of defiance from the sword

Then the easiest thing that comes to it leads to eternity

وَهَلand has شَفَّworn thin كومَthe high-humped ones of العيسِthe pale camels شَوقٌlonging مُبَرِّحٌagonizing
كَشَوقيlike my longing فَلَجَّتso they persisted فيin الذَميلِtrotting وَفيand in الوَخدِswift striding
Has an agonizing longing worn thin the high-humped pale camels,
Hearts that you have dispelled fear from with its opposite
Like my longing, so they persist in trotting and swift striding?
For with them you are sweeter than wealth and children
إِلىtoward مَلِكٍa king يَلقاهُmeets him عافيa seeker of نَوالِهِhis bounty
بِعِزَّةِwith the dignity of مُجدٍa giver لاnot بِذِلَّةِwith the abasement of مُستَجديa beggar
Toward a king whom seekers of his bounty meet
You have remained for our lord so the people of his land
With a giver's dignity, not a beggar's abasement.
With your sacrifice and kindness in time of ease
وَأَروَعَand a noble man لاnot يَقضيputs an end عَلىto الجودِgenerosity لِلغِنىfor riches
وَلَكِنَّهُbut he يَقضيputs an end عَلىto الوَفرِabundance لِلوَفدِfor delegations
And a noble man who does not sacrifice generosity for riches,
And the ideas of his dominion and virtuous one
But sacrifices his abundance for visiting delegations.
By your quarter—raining mercy like a blessed star
أَياO مَنone whose نُفوسُthe lives of الخَلقِmankind بَعضُsome of هِباتِهِhis gifts
تَعَذَّرَis hard to find مَنone who يُسديbestows النَوالَbounty كَماas تُسديyou bestow
O you whose gifts include the very lives of men,
Humam—who established from justice a practice
None can be found who bestows bounty as you do.
The counting of which falls short even of the centuries
وَياand O مَنone who يَرىregards بِالقاصِديهِthose seeking him كَماas يَرىregards
أَخوone possessed of صَبوَةٍpassion بِالوَصلِreunion فيin عَقِبِthe aftermath of الصَدِّrejection
O you who regard those who seek you as
Yes, I have turned away from all no goal besides you
A lover regards reunion after rejection.
So I have calculated my riding camels to the number [of yours]
لَقَدindeed مُدِحَwere praised الأَجوادُthe generous فيin كُلِّevery مَوطِنٍplace
وَماyet not وَجَدواdid they feel بِالمَكرُماتِfor noble deeds كَذاsuch الوَجدِpassion
The generous have been praised in every place,
I have left shadows that are shaded in another
Yet never have they felt such passion for noble deeds.
And inclined to a shade encompassing the people
وَشَبَّهَand made a comparison عَنout of جَهلٍignorance حَبيبٌHabib وَلوand had رَأَىhe seen
زَمانَكَyour age لَمnot يَعدِلwould have equated بِهِwith it زَمَنَthe season of الوَردِroses
Habib made his comparison in ignorance; had he seen
And I have said to my days: "I have reached the apex of heights
Your age, he would not have equated it with the season of roses.
So solve, O noose of fortune, if you desire or pull tighter"
لَئِنif indeed صَحَّit is true أَنَّthat العَدلَjustice فيin العُمرِlife-span زائِدٌadds length
فَأَيسَرُthen the least of ماwhat تَأتيهِyou do يُفضيleads إِلىto الخُلدِimmortality
If it is true that justice lengthens life,
And I have gone astray in paths of immaculateness
Then the least you do leads to immortality.
So guide me to it, for one whom you guide does not fear misguidance
وَإِنand though سُدتَyou surpassed as leader فيamong الأَيّامِthe days كُلَّevery مُسَوَّدٍappointed leader
لَقَدindeed ذُدتَyou drove away مِنof أَحداثِهاtheir calamities كُلَّevery مُسوَدِّdark affliction
Though you have surpassed every appointed leader in these days,
For I have the boldness that my family has
You have driven away every dark calamity they bring.
And not what they have in describing your glory that I have
لِيَهنِكَmay you rejoice in ماwhat أَصفَتكَoffered you sincerely أَلسِنَةُthe tongues of الوَرىmankind
مِنَof الشُكرِgratitude عَفواًspontaneously وَالقُلوبُand hearts مِنَof الوُدِّaffection
May you rejoice in what mankind's tongues offer you sincerely:
And the easiest thing I strive for is the poverty that
Their unbidden gratitude, and what hearts offer of love.
Incapacitates those before and after me
قُلوبٌhearts ذَعَرتَyou drove away الخَوفَfear عَنهاfrom them بِضِدِّهِwith its opposite
فَأَنتَso you are بِهاto them أَحلىsweeter مِنَthan المالِwealth وَالوُلدِand children
Hearts from which you drove fear away with its opposite:
Lighter than cloaked frost garment
To them you are sweeter than wealth and children.
And faster than frost in traversing lands
بَقيتَmay you remain لِمَولاناfor our lord فَأَهلُfor the people of بِلادِهِhis lands
بِذَبِّكِthrough your defense وَالإِحسانِand kindness فيin زَمَنٍan age رَغدِprosperous
May you remain for our lord, for the people of his lands
Verses, that if recited, a listener would not know
Enjoy an easy age through your defense and kindness.
Whether they descend from Damascus or flow from Najd
وَإِنَّand indeed خَطيرَthe dignitary of مُلكِهِhis kingdom وَصَفِيَّهُand his chosen confidant
بِرَبعِكَat your abode نَوءاtwo rain-stars of رَحمَةٍmercy كَوكَباtwo stars of سَعدِgood fortune
And the dignitary of his kingdom and his chosen confidant
And were it not for the manifest virtue of praises
Are at your abode two rain-stars of mercy, two stars of good fortune.
Discourse would not have been opened by "In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful"
هُمامانِtwo noble men قَدindeed سَنّاestablished مِنَof العَدلِjustice سُنَّةًa practice
يُقَصِّرُfalls short عَنof تَعديدِهاrecounting it لَدَدُthe obstinacy of اللُدِّthe contentious
Two noble men who have established a practice of justice
So you have not ceased wearing every robe
Whose full recounting defeats the obstinacy of the contentious.
The sight of which is preferred over the softest silk
أَلاbehold إِنَّنيindeed I أَضرَبتُturned away عَنfrom كُلِّevery مَطلَبٍpursuit
سِواكَexcept you فَعَدَّيتُso I passed beyond الثِمادَthe scant pools إِلىto العِدِّthe perennial spring
Indeed, I have turned away from every pursuit
And celebrations do not cease to come and vanish
Except you, passing from scant pools to an unfailing spring.
While you are the loftiest in mention, destiny, and glory
تَرَكتُI left ظِلالاًshades يُستَظَلُّone seeks shelter بِغَيرِهاbeneath shades other than these
وَمِلتُand I turned إِلىtoward ظِلٍّa shade عَلىover الخَلقِmankind مُمتَدِّextending
I left shades for which one seeks shelter elsewhere,
So there is your poem translated into English while preserving the poetic output. I have translated the Arabic poem without adding any other output.
And turned toward a shade spread over all mankind.
وَقُلتُand I said لِأَيّاميto my days بَلَغتُI have reached مَدىthe furthest reach of العُلىeminence
فَحُلّيso loosen خِناقِthe noose of الحَظِّfortune إِنif شِئتَyou wish أَوor شُدّيtighten
I told my days: I have reached the utmost height,
So loosen Fortune's noose if you wish, or draw it tight.
وَقَدand indeed تِهتُI wandered lost فيin طُرقِthe paths of النَباهَةِdistinction فَاِهدِنيso guide me

إِلَيهاto it فَماfor not يَخشىfears الضَلالَةَstraying مَنone whom تَهديyou guide
I have wandered lost along the paths to distinction; guide me
To it, for whoever you guide need not fear going astray.
فَعِنديfor I have مِنَof الإِقدامِboldness ماwhat عِندَpossessed by أُسرَتيmy family
وَماbut not عِندَهُمdo they have مِنof وَصفِdescribing مَجدِكَyour glory ماwhat عِنديI have
I possess the same boldness as my family,
But they lack what I possess in describing your glory.
وَأَيسَرُand the least of ماwhat أَسعىI strive لَهُfor it الفِقَرُthe verses الَّتيwhich

And the least of what I strive for are the verses that
Defeat those before me and baffle those after me.
أَخَفُّlighter مِنَthan البُردِthe mantle المُحَبَّرِembroidered مَلبَساًas a garment
وَأَسرَعُand swifter فيin قَطعِcrossing البِلادِthe lands مِنَthan البُردِthe couriers
Lighter to wear than an embroidered mantle,
And swifter in crossing lands than the couriers:

رَقَت مِن دِمَشقٍ أَو تَحَدَّرنَ مِن نَجدِ
Rhymed verses which, when recited, leave the listener unsure
Whether they rose from Damascus or descended from Najd.
وَلَوand if لَمnot يَكُنwere فَضلُthe excellence of المَحامِدِpraises باهِراًradiant

Were the excellence of praises not radiant,
The revealed Scripture would not have begun with praise.

May you always wear from it every robe
Whose fragrance is preferred to the scent of nadd incense.

May the feasts ever come and pass,
While you remain exalted in renown, rank, and glory.
