وَأَصبَحَand became حَوضيmy pool فيin جَنابِكَyour precinct مُترَعاbrimful
عَلاءًwith eminence وَرَوضيand my meadow مِنfrom سَحابِكَyour clouds مُمرِعاlush
My pool in your precinct became brimful
of eminence, and my meadow lush from your clouds.
فَجُدso be generous بِالعَطاياwith gifts عَنaway from حِياضٍpools مَلَأتَهاyou filled them
كَفانيit suffices me نَوالاًas largesse أَنthat أَقولَI speak وَتَسمَعاand you listen
Bestow your gifts away from pools you have already filled;
enough largesse for me is to speak and have you listen.
فَماfor not طَلَبيmy asking for المَعروفَkindness إِلّاexcept غَنيمَةٌa gain
لَدَيكَfor you وَقَدwhen indeed حُزتَyou attained العُلىeminence وَالغِنىand wealth مَعاtogether
My asking for kindness is only a gain
for you, who have won both eminence and wealth.
أَيادٍfavors تُباريrival الغَيثَrain إِبّانَat the time of هَطلِهِits downpour
وَتَخلُفُهُand replace it فيناamong us إِذاwhen هُوَit أَقلَعاhas ceased
Favors that rival rain at the height of its downpour,
and replace it among us when it ceases.
وَزَعتُI restrained رَجائيmy hope عَنfrom سِواكَanyone but you بِبَعضِهاwith some of them
وَلَولاكَand but for you أَضحىit would be فيamong الوَرىmankind مُتَوَزِّعاscattered
With some of them I restrained my hope from all but you;
without you, it would have been divided among mankind.
وَكَيفَand how يُؤَدّيcan discharge الحَمدُpraise فَرضَthe obligation of جَميعِهاall of them
وَأَيسَرُهاwhile the least of them يَستَغرِقُexhausts الحَمدَpraise أَجمَعاentirely
How could praise discharge the debt owed to them all,
when the least of them exhausts all praise?
وَمالِيَand why should I لاnot أُثنيpraise عَلَيكَyou بِبَعضِfor some of ماwhat
أَنَلتَyou bestowed وَقَدwhen already أَثنىhas praised الجَمادُthe lifeless تَطَوُّعاunbidden
Why should I not praise you for some of what
you have bestowed, when lifeless things praise you unbidden?
فَدُمتَso may you endure لِهَذاfor this العيدِfeast ماas long as دامَit lasts وَاِنكَفىand departs

May you endure for this feast, while it lasts and when it ends,
welcoming it and bidding it farewell, despite your foes.
وَلاand may not زالَcease فيهِon it مُستَجاباًto be answered دُعاءُthe prayer of مَنwhoever

And on it may the prayer ever be answered of whoever
prays for you, as long as pilgrims chant 'Here I am' and pray.
فَكَمand how many مُستَقِلٍّa departing man عَنكَfrom you ماnot تَرَكَتhave left لَهُfor him
إِلَيكَto you عَطاياكَyour gifts الجَسيمَةُimmense مَرجِعاa reason to return
How many departing from you have been left no
need to return to you, thanks to your immense gifts!
وَماand how أَحسَنَbeautiful العافيthe seeker of bounty بِعَينِكَin your eyes قادِماًarriving
وَأَقبَحَهُand how ugly he is فيهاin them إِذاwhen هُوَhe وَدَّعاbids farewell
How fair in your eyes is the seeker of bounty arriving,
and how ugly in them when he bids farewell!
فَدونَكَهاso take it ماnot أَطلَعَتهاhas brought it forth صَحيفَةٌa page
كَماas ظَنَّهاhe deemed it ذوthe possessor of الفَضلِmerit لِلفَضلِfor merit مَطلَعاa rising-place
Take it: no page has displayed it
as the man of merit conceived it—a dawning-place of merit.
إِذاwhen قَلَّwanes عَرفُthe fragrance of المِسكِmusk مِنfrom طولِthe length of لُبثِهِits keeping

When musk's fragrance wanes through long keeping,
the passage of nights renews this poem's perfume.
سَقىwatered رَوضَهاits garden غَيثُthe rain of المَعاليlofty deeds وَضُمِّنَتand it was filled with
حَديثاًa tale إِذاwhen ماindeed سارَit travels فيthrough الأَرضِthe earth أَسرَعاit hastens
The rain of lofty deeds watered its garden, and it was filled
with a tale that speeds when it travels through the earth.

The gold-dust and pearls of speech have made it
a jeweled crown upon the head of high glory.
لَعاشَsurely has lived النَدىbounty مُذsince ظَلتَyou remained فيناamong us فَلاso may not رَأَتsee

Bounty has surely lived since you dwelt among us; may no
eye through all time behold bounty's body laid low.
