    فَعَلامَ يَسعى طالِبوهُ ضَلالا

    The star is easier to attain than your lofty reach;

so why do those who seek it strive astray?

    فَتَبارَكَ المُعطيكَها وَتَعالى

    No one among creation vies with you in loftiness;

blessed and exalted is He who granted it to you.

beside one whose strides have become miles?

resolves unless he rides through terrors.

Whoever shuns life's water while it is clouded

amid hardships will never drink it clear.

then, when you conquer, you make them locks.

whose wearer is never brought low.

you made her shield blade-edges and spearheads.

You refused to let eyes remain sleepless

in fear of misfortunes, and hearts afraid.

He gave the subjects their wishes through his care—

he who, since taking them under protection, has never known neglect.

The swiftest of mortals when charging—rather, the loftiest

when rising—and the truest to his word when speaking.

Through his resolve, his judgment, and his giving,

they were safe from death, oppression, and drought.

and reached it before you reached the evenings!

who, like you, carries heavy burdens.

The paths of what you achieved were narrow, and none found

within their straits room to act but you.

    ما عَزَّ إِلّا مَن أَهانَ المالا

    You held your wealth cheap, without affectation;

none grows mighty except one who holds wealth cheap.

You cast aside the opinions of mankind, and often

defied the reproachers in pursuing loftiness.

is fit to win what you desire; leave omens aside.

battle, and the judgment that never faltered.

but a man who makes sword-blows his argument.

War had remained an exchange of fortunes in battle

for ages, and rights were left to be settled by combat.

So you inscribed a decree upon your enemies' heads

with the points of blades: its fortunes would no longer alternate.

defending its sanctuary and killing chieftains.

without doubt, since you sent them forth,

marked for victory; before them no

eye had seen ostrich chicks carrying men.

in veils and saddlecloths from what they stirred up.

which kept shading mountains of armies.

man of many words, and on battle's day a man of deeds.

has never vied with the illustrious without surpassing them.

you clothed him in reverence and honor?

    that surpassed kindness and graciousness.

Thus you found Ayn al-Dawla the keen blade

whose good fortune people cite in proverbs.

A sword of 'Adi lineage, never drawn

against a disease unless it is incurable.

Pride belongs to him who recounts good deeds, not

to him who recounts paternal and maternal uncles.

your kingdom's enemies the swaying spears.

beside which they saw other watering places as mere trickles.

from the bounty of one who yesterday had been a scourge.

the bounty of your hands fulfills hopes.

until I imagined that lodging was combat.

    لا زالَ رَبعُكَ لِلرَجاءِ عِقالا

    Today they have laid their staffs before you;

may your abode always tether hope.

by force; he succeeded who sought it by asking.

Numayr saw that your wrath was an affliction

that would destroy them unless they cured it with your pardon.

So they came to eradicate the affliction that kills whomever

it besets; and you became a cloud pouring rain.

it sent shower after shower upon those who offered loyalty.

draw Shabib near in hope and seeking refuge.

through your gracious judgment, and their stumbling forgiven.

your favors remains referred to the impossible.

before anyone else they remain barren.

How many unruly camels you have led with kindness's halter-rope,

which, even as calves, defied every king!

Your generosity made the generous forgotten, your kingship the

claimants to kingship, and your might the heroes.

the truth of his oath who swears by your stature.

those necks turn aside, you turn them into fetters.

one possessed of power, without reaping humiliation.

    wicked, or guide the misguided.

or, if you wish, they become swords and blade-points.

all wild beasts fear the lion.

when they boast in words, you boast in deeds.

in rut; the bright blades clang whenever he charges.

I see kingdoms in Iraq and elsewhere

complaining to you of barrenness and drought.

off calamities that keep coming in succession.

Whenever you depart from al-Awasim toward them

to destroy them, your departure will be their weaning.

Take it by swordplay, not trickery; enough

of such treachery has this kingdom suffered, preyed upon

by every sword-bearer whose baldric is too mean

to be a strap on the sandal you wear.

seeing the lions surrender their lairs?

    فَاِجعَل لَهُم بِنُفوسِهِم أَشغالا

    They were free for amusement because you were occupied elsewhere;

make them preoccupied with their own lives.

Let them hear in the clash of what you have been girded with a sound

that makes them forget hazaj and ramal songs.

Constantine's realm is still more exposed

than those I mentioned—yes, and gloomier in spirit.

Had he not, through your goodwill, warded off death's onslaught

from his land, he would not have felt safe from earthquake.

    ما اِغتَرَّ مَن أَوسَعتَهُ إِمهالا

    I think it will be ripe for seizure after seven have passed;

no one you grant ample respite should be deluded.

They remained short to him, for fear of what

you would bring, but long to the Muslims.

of ambitions trailing their skirts over Suha.

Al-Muzaffar was created triumphant in praise,

whether he fulfills wishes or severs limbs.

He whose sanctuary you laid open praises your might,

and he whom you gave a gift praises your hand's profusion.

without increasing your elevation and majesty.

after its delay had long been prolonged.

until it walked proudly, swaggering in its conceit.

Rejoice in your festival after its predecessor; may no

eyes ever see this shade depart.

Two festivals—a feast and a conquest before it—

have added freshness and beauty to your time.

That one is nobler in men's hearts; and ever

    Ramadan surpasses Shawwal.

Were it not for your delight in praise and those who offer it,

the abased art of letters would not have become freely lavished.

    فَلِذاكَ مَن أَثنى عَلَيكَ أَطالا

    You lavished favors upon the speakers of verse;

hence whoever praises you speaks at length.

When I saw that your loftiness had no equal,

I knew that you had followed no model.

And if every deed of yours surpasses other deeds,

then with my praise of you I have surpassed other words.
