May you never cease to rise, even if your enviers grow dejected,
You still rise high though your enviers are dejected,
Until your fortune reaches what noble lineage decrees.
Or fate reaches what it decrees.

It is still below what you hope for and await.
It is less than what you hope for and await.

High stations elevate people previously obscure,
You ascend levels where others before you faltered,
But you are one through whom ranks themselves keep rising.
While you kept rising through the ranks.

If the bright stars are not your brethren,
Then, unrivalled, you are their neighbor, though no kin.
You are, beside them, an eminent neighbor.

If you are singled out for its fullest measure, that is no wonder.
So it is no wonder if you are distinguished by the best of them.

Let whoever is obsessed with it angrily suppose
Distinction is a treasure that cannot be seized by force.
That excellence is a thing that can be seized by force!

For before lofty honors lies a long, distant journey,
For beyond achievements are hardships
Along which hardship and ruin stand before success.
Wherein hardship, not success or boldness, is found.

He granted you what he singles out and chooses from them,
He loved you, selecting you from among them.

Yet encounters no vain ingrate among what He gives.

Misfortunes have turned tail and fled.

His word that you are my reinforcement is no title,
Even if some fool supposes it merely a title.
Though some ignorant fool supposes it a surname.

While the others remain, like long roots, firm.

When the sky was too narrow for your army at dawn,
You spread through the air an army without clamor.
You scattered in the air a host that has no peer.

And is shaded by fire that has no flame.

You and your two sons are the seven planets.

As if the Pleiades poured forth a sea from which
From it the robes, the lean thoroughbreds, and the domes.
The mantles, coronets, domes, and cloaks scooped.

Horses are in dire straits, their wine atop them.

Against those who rebel, their own compatriots rebel.

From Dārim, at every clash, it was protected by
A conquest over glory and loftiness in every fray
Mighty warriors who have mastered glory and loftiness.
Has protected it from the evils of enemies.

When they refused the milk of milch-camels' teats as hospitality,
When they refused the pregnancy of hybrids,
They were milked among them from jugular veins.
Their cattle spent the night being milked by them.

Though the honor you have established suffices you
If you boast of your inherited nobility,
Without recalling what your noble fathers established,
Man is not ennobled by pure lineage or upbringing.
فَالمَرءُfor a man إِنif لَمnot تُقَدِّمهُadvance him مَآثِرُهُhis achievements

لَم يُعلِهِ نَسَبٌ زاكٍ وَلا نَشَبُ
A man, if his achievements do not advance him,
As for Damascus—you had helped it before
Is not raised by pure lineage or wealth.
When its supporters vanished.

As for Damascus, you had already come to its aid
They vanished by capture, killing, and retaking of foes
In former times, when its defenders were absent.
While you alone there held your ground.

Gone through captivity, death, or seeking sustenance among foes,
You defended it with a ruler's defense—
While you alone within it were a clamorous army.
Did you expect such a time as yours?

You defended it as a king defends it:
You were farthest of God's creation from any rift
Were you then awaiting this present time of yours?
When swords and lances were parted.
فَكُنتَso you were أَبعَدَthe furthest خَلقِof the creatures of اللَهِGod مِنfrom فَرَقٍfear

How often you plunged into raging fires
When swords parted from their scabbards.
That none with doubts about himself could dare!

How often you spoke impromptu judgments
That no man concerned for his own life would enter!
While the innocent and culprits kept company!

How often you uttered decisive words extempore,
Thus from your eloquence the water of virtue pours,
While bright swords met upon the heroes' crowns!
And from your beneficence, the water of kindness floods.

From your eloquence the water of excellence pours,
If glory can be won among nations,
And from your fingers the water of generosity flows.
Yours is inborn and won.

You have oppressed, so the greatest conquerors
In you it is both inborn and acquired.
Deemed meager what they vanquished.

You struck, and champions thought little of what they had conquered;
You have spent freely, so the greatest benefactors
You gave, and generous men deemed their gifts scant.
Deemed paltry what they gave.

Generous deeds that robbed riders of their compassion
Kind deeds that make the saddlebags feel pity
For hardy she-camels, whose knees are never bent to rest.
For the camel litters—they cannot be counted.

Those seeking gifts have made your palace their home;
You have turned your Qaṣr al-ʿĀfiyūn into their dwelling
As one band leaves it, another band arrives.
When some of their caravans depart, others come.

When the expenses of those who come to you fall short,
You drink whatever they serve of them, unmixed or blended.
You drink what they proffer or deny.

When cups of praise come to you overflowing,
Not even draughts or sips from them reach the others.
Choice drafts of it don’t reach them.

Noble in spirit, you chose well for your soul:
You have ennobled a soul, so you choose what is best for it;
Wealth is despised, and praise is stored up.
Wealth therefore seems contemptible, praise coveted.

You store up none of what you earn
Except as clouds hoard some of their water.
Except as clouds store up their water.

The aid you gave the Muslims allowed them to savor
Through you a cure followed by no sickness.
A cure that leaves no malady uncured.

So may the sultanate of the Caliph's crown endure forever,
Depart from mankind, while they fear and hope,
And may all creatures' fears and desires cease!

A hand whose protection shelters those who seek refuge in it,
A hand that denies due to its power is a sanctuary,
Just as its giving offers choice gifts to its needy visitor.
Just as one that acts freely in giving is a bouquet.

Its bounty, like pouring rain, is sought for sustenance;
Its volition, like the courser's charge, cannot be stopped,
What it protects, like a lion's lair, is avoided.
Its gifts, like the lion's den, cannot be breached.

A populace you have relieved of worries.

Whose rising banished doubts from your heart.
Doubts vanishing from your heart as it rises.

How, when his nature disposes him to fast,
And his face is awaited like the crescent of breaking the fast?
His face being like the crescent moon awaited?

My upbringing in your shadow never swerved,
Nor stayed away because I am estranged from you.
Nor have I severed it though I'm drawn from you.

Rather, I wanted to notify one stretching out a hand
Both hands, that your overflowing bounty gives unasked.
That your hand is full even when the stream runs dry.

A kindness that escapes my hopes to overtake it—
Praise be to God that flight did not save me!
Thanks be to God that escape does not embarrass me!

If I exhausted my life praising you,
I would not fulfill one tenth of what is due.
I could not fulfill a tenth of what is owed.

Let every benefactor whose kindness was prompted by a cause
So every puller of beauty's reins is led
Be ransom for one who begins a favor without any cause.
To ransom what lacks cause with caused bounty.

To turn aside the days' caprices that subdue me,
That I have clung to a cord that never snaps.
I cling to a rope that cannot be severed.

And I am certain, from old, that my death
Is fulfilled without a pack-saddle biting a camel's withers.
Will come though no fleeting shadow pierced it.

Consider one who finds no scope for greed,
So behold one aloof from greed, yet tied to the earth,
Out of integrity, though the earth offers him ample scope:
Upright, though the land makes him slip.

An unbroken camel enticed by the glory he wins,
To Muṣʿab, whom honor contents and protects,
And a foe he defeats—not by water and grass.
Not water or grass, but the opponent proves helpless!

When I want an openhanded man to relax,
I pass round wine fathered by thought, not grapes.
I let loose a gentle wind—not grapes.

Though my love for you and refinement chose them.
Even if my love and propriety select it.

Has raised speech untainted by any falsehood.
Deception cleaves not to the former as it does to the latter.
