May what good fortune has granted you bring you joy,

and may Time's doing what you wish bring you joy.

A goal for which resolve had far to reach,

with endless deserts lying before its bounds.

An undertaking you rose to without a supporter,

while the people of the earth sat idle through weakness.

    فَهَل أَنباكَ بِالصَدَرِ الوُرودُ

    One like you is never forsaken by sound judgment;

did coming to water foretell your return from it?

You refused to sleep the sleep of Ibn Hind,

in anger, until Walid awakened him.

And you spared ears a report

that arises and makes the skin shudder:

news that made women's chambers too cramped

because of it, and cradles inhospitable to children.

Truth belied the suspicions of those who opposed you,

in which your promise and your threat were equally fulfilled.

A threat that left the renegades slain,

a threat no feast day matched in what it wrought.

Were it not ranked alongside the day of Badr,

we would call it the one unrivaled day.

A stand in which Numayr supported Asad,

and Atud joined forces with Kalb.

What a protected domain they laid open when they revealed

what the tent-poles had concealed in peacetime!

    وَكَم أَمَلٍ إِلى أَجَلٍ يَقودُ

    Hope brought Tughlubikk down;

how many a hope leads to a death!

Like the Ashdaq of Abd Shams, when he coveted

an inheritance Sa'id had not left him.

The people of that land had, in him, a neighbor—

a rebel intent on annihilating them.

I marvel at one who claims the horizons as his kingdom,

yet whose utmost is to stagnate in Baghdad.

    He assaults its subjects wrongfully,

and shrinks back whenever iron clangs.

And at an appointed successor content with abasement,

driven from the watering pools, who never defends them.

He has a sanctuary there where nothing is forbidden

    except safety and sleep.

    وَلولا الجَدبُ ما أُكِلَ الهَبيدُ

    His fear pursued him with something fiercer still;

but for drought, no one would eat colocynth seeds.

    Ibn Muslima foolishly directed him

with counsel no prudent man would offer.

    Excessive caution doubled his weakness,

while fierce striking fortified your strength.

Yet fierce striking brings no glory

unless sound judgment carries it through.

More wondrous than either is a sword in Egypt,

by which the prescribed penalties are enforced at Sinjar

against those among them whom monasteries concealed—

bodies the earth refuses to receive.

They were dislodged from their positions by blows

    that dispel grudges and hatreds.

How many burning thirsts the heat of blows has quenched,

though cool water had failed against them!

They met their doom through their support of Quraysh,

as Thamud did through its most wretched man.

And he heard sword-edges singing among them,

while compacts and covenants availed nothing.

Neither newly acquired glory protected him from what

you intended for him, nor ancestral glory.

So he turned away, praising the sleek, seasoned horses,

with no praiseworthy mark left by his sword.

The gullible man was deceived by religion's weakness

there, and by its champion's being far away.

Through your resolve, what they wanted escaped them,

and it brought them to what they did not want.

Ever have hopes, white though they are,

been belied by deaths, black though they are.

One army counts its return a victory,

while another passes away and never returns.

Qutrumush's advance will not be repeated,

nor will Umar have a new life.

The two wings of a ravenous bird of prey were broken,

so it could neither fly nor hunt.

And a mountain of harm—your assaults weakened its

many foundations, while its slopes grew weak.

Assaults the kings heard of, so that

their thrones rocked with fear of them.

Their report spread, striking terror into

a chief, while setting a stubborn man straight.

You assailed them with every scion of the thickets,

whose kills sustain a hyena and a wolf.

His heart delights in far travel and a return

that speeds the march, not in flute and lute.

And he loves rising against enemies,

with unwavering purpose, not slender figures or breasts.

And he is thrilled by bright swords ringing above the

helmets, not by the basit metre or song.

Had even ostriches sought your protection,

lions would have feared their assaults.

How much more, then, when your protégé is bold and resourceful,

challenged by deaths, yet never turning aside.

He stood alone, shunned and feared,

as a tribe living apart is shunned.

And he lavished beneficence upon him until

    existence delivered him from nothingness.

A generous man whose gifts include lofty honors,

a mighty man whose greetings include prostration.

Whoever hopes in him gains wealth and honor,

while his hater dies in choking grief.

A cloud with lightning flashes of cheerfulness,

unaccompanied by thunderous reminders of favors.

    Unceasing, indifferent as it rains,

whether a grateful soul or an ingrate receives it.

He gave away what you bestowed, without concern

about it, knowing its first giver would give again.

All generosity is ascribed to your bounty,

as rising waters are ascribed to rain.

You encompassed the people, non-Arabs and Arabs alike,

with gifts from which no neck was left bare.

Bounties that thwarted their enemy, and nearly

made the lowlands and uplands too narrow to hold them.

Caravans came and went with them to their recipients,

    as coins circulate among merchants.

Many gains were brought about by

outlays whose slightest burden bows one down.

You sent the thoroughbred, sleek horses, lean-bellied,

a led horse keeping pace with a mounted one.

And upon them, from Udad and Adnan,

were armies no armies could confront.

From the lineages that brought Kisra down,

and that, with palm-stalks among their weapons.

They milked destruction's teat in every barren waste,

where camel saddles stood in for horse saddles.

And mountains bore them clear of the mountains—

lean steeds whose saddle-felts never dry.

    وَإِن ضَبَحَت فَما يَنجو طَريدُ

    When they strike sparks, no darkness grows dense;

when they pant, no quarry escapes.

Proudly they denied the earth its desire, so

eyes and cheeks became their places to tread.

Al-Mansur entered Mosul, and praise was offered

by delegations for his might and noble pride.

And its pulpits bore true witness,

with the angels of heaven as witnesses to it.

And Baghdad will be joined to it,

as Zabid was joined to Aden.

Forearms have grown too weak for bows

from which they shot at foes, and fire-sticks have failed.

The fire that blazed and was feared

will subside, then die out altogether.

Yours is manifest victory in every direction

you head, and your enemies' lot is annihilating death.

You surpassed kings through glorious deeds,

making viziers the easiest of those you surpass.

You secured in right guidance what they failed to secure,

and built in lofty honor what they failed to build.

All your building is reward and gratitude,

while what they build is bricks and plaster.

Goodness by which hopes are held captive,

and justice by which immortality is deserved.

You attained a station within the caliphate

where no rival or envier can be found.

No wish has dreamed of your equal,

nor has Time bestowed one, nor will it.

May you endure, with your two likenesses, piety and forbearance,

and may your shade stretch far over the world.

May there ever be, from among you, in kingship's sky,

stars that good fortune never passes by.

May feast days always come like this,

with your fortune triumphant and blessed in them.

Your deeds have left me nothing more to say,

yet your delight asks to hear again

    وَأَينَ وُقوعُها مِمّا أُريدُ

    praises in which I have often excelled;

but how far their effect falls short of what I seek!

When they are recited to the enviers, they say:

Thus let matchless pearls be strung!

There is no excellence except in a glorious man

of lofty ambitions, whose praiser excels.

We shall never fear that glory will stray

when a far-ranging rhyme has tethered it.

So spread through me the tale of glory, for I

extol the honor you have firmly founded.

Remain its banner, so long as soil grows moist,

its watering continues, and a branch grows green.
