ليثير من وجدي ويقفل مسرعا
A dream-phantom visited just before daylight broke,
Lean figure pained me before the breaking dawn
To stir my longing and return in haste.
To stir my love and leave hastily again
ونأىand it withdrew فكدتso I nearly أبيحI allow غادةthe maiden of لحظهits gaze
ونأى فكدت أبيح غادة لحظه
نهبthe plundering of الحياةlife ولاand not أكونI would be مودعاbidding farewell
نهب الحياة ولا أكون مودعا
And it withdrew; I almost let the maiden of its gaze
He kept his distance, I almost bid him stay
Plunder my life, rather than bid farewell myself.
To plunder life and not remain to say goodbye
هيهاتَfar from it! لاnot يرضىit is satisfied بهاwith it ولوand if انهthat it
هيهاتَ لا يرضى بها ولو انه

رضيَ الحياة لما بقيتُ مروّعا
Far from it! It would not accept that; and had it
Alas! He would not be pleased even if
Accepted my life, I would not have remained terrified.
Life itself were pleased for me to stay scared
