Indeed, by the love for which I defied the reproaching women,
Although I disobeyed the chastisers for passion
you have made your counsel heard by one who will not heed it.
You have certainly heard advice unaccepting

Had you been fair, you'd not deny my standing
at a still-visible ruin in Dhat al-Dal.
At the ruins of one with beauty unrivaled

A time has passed with it verdant

Nights gentle to me whatever I desire
an uninvited diner's finesse and an uninvited drinker's bold entry.
Relaxed hiding and passionate siege

expressive, while our tears were letters.
Expressive, and our tears epistles

So galloping after the caravan turned at dawn

With the departure of the fever, the stages crossed

بِهاbecause of them عُدِمَwas lacking المُساجِلُthe rival وَالمُشاكِلand the equal
Traits in gifts and calamities,
Therein are neither disputants nor contentious
through which no rival or equal can be found.
Due to his justice and even-handedness
تُنَزِّقُهُmakes him impetuous الحَمِيَّةُzealous pride حينَwhen يُعصىhe is disobeyed
فَيَعروهُthen comes over him التَطَوُّلُgenerosity وَهوَwhile he is صائِلattacking
Zealous pride makes him impetuous when disobeyed,
Zeal tears him apart when disobeyed
yet generosity comes over him even as he attacks.
So justification reins it in while ascending

أَياديهِhis deeds of might كَأَنعُمِهِlike his favors كَوامِلcomplete
Were it not for his judgment in favor of pardon,
And were it not for his view of pardon
his deeds of might, like his favors, would be complete.
His hands would be like his gifts, perfect

وَيَحكُمُand he rules فيover الرَعاياhis subjects حُكمَwith the judgment of عادِلa just man
He wrongs the wealth his hands contain,
He does injustice to one whose hands contain
yet rules his subjects with a just man's judgment.
And rules the subjects with the judgment of justice

And he wears garments made from his character,
He wears from his fine traits garments
with trailing hems let down over al-Jawza.
Spacious on beauty's branches

They have a fragrance wafting from his generosity,
Their scent is perfumed through his bliss
and the groves' fragrance comes from their blossoms.
And through its luminosity the aromas of beauty

The choicest of a clan, the breast of a house,
A family's guardian and house's incense
through whom Kilab has boasted over the tribes.
With it the dogs took pride over tribes
لِأَملاكِfor the kings of العَواصِمِal-Awasim مِنهُfrom him بَيتٌa house

In him the kings of al-Awasim have a house,
Of capital cities' rulers it has a house
half of which would be a prize for the kings of Babylon.
Its half outweighs Babylon's kingdom
فَزُرهُso visit him عائِلاًin need أَوor مُستَفيداًseeking gain
وَجاوِدand vie in generosity مَنwith whomever أَرَدتَyou wish بِهِthrough him وَفاضِلand vie in excellence
So visit him in need or seeking gain,
Visit it either as family or beneficiary
and through him vie in generosity and excellence with anyone you wish.
And frequent one you wish to be virtuous

Virtues—if the sun could reach the lowest
Merits the sun itself barely reaches
of their range, no evening hours would approach it.
The lowest of its extensions

All people came to know them, until
Its landmarks all people know
the learned and the ignorant were equal in that knowledge.
So that scholar therein and ignorant are equal

You combined the pouncing of a lion, unassailable in its
You combined the lion's pouncing prowess
domain, with the composure of a mighty king.
With the king's flowing severity

Beneath that calm lies a sea of knowledge,
And beneath tranquility is a sea of knowledge
by which the debater and disputant are known.
With which the debater and polemic were known
مَقالٌspeech تَعجِزُare powerless البُلَغاءُthe eloquent عَنهُbefore it
كَعَجزِlike the inability of المَدحِpraise عَمّاbefore what أَنتَyou فاعِلdo
Speech that leaves the eloquent powerless,
A saying the eloquent cannot match
as praise is powerless before what you do.
Like praising what you have done

It grows long, yet no slips are found in it,
It lengthens and omissions are noticed
as ra is absent from Wasil's words.
Like missing the letter ra in the words of Wasil

سَبيلاًa path ماnot تَقَدَّمَwent before فيهِon it سائِلa petitioner
You took, toward praise and without a guide,
You treaded to praise without guide
a path no petitioner had preceded you on.
A path no questioner has preceded

And some of that praise remains with me, sheltered
And I have therein a shelterer taking shade
in your shade, though roaming through the horizons.
In your shadow though the horizons span

Noble achievements never cease to gain
Continuously you increase in sublimity
distinction through it, and assemblies are adorned.
Thereby in nobility and decoration of gatherings

It passed beyond all whose bounty is hoped for,
You surpassed all whose aid is hoped for
the Euphrates turning it away from scant remaining pools.
And the Euphrates tilted you from rivals

It visits only the one who spared me
So none visit me but one who sufficed me
courting the aloof and begging the miserly.
Affection of one who turns away and stingy asking

You remained sovereign, hoped for and feared
and may no calamities destroy your endeavors.
And your efforts did not go to waste

May your lands never lack the one who spares them
Nor did your land lack one it sufficed
a tyrant's arrogance and a deceiver's assault.
The oppression of a tyrant and rape of a raider

Both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha pass
Creation altogether passes
for a time, while your reign does not pass away.
While your kingdom is without passing

Your edge never fails in calamities,
Your limit in tribulations does not waver
and your star of good fortune never sets.
And your star in fortunes does not set
