You drove them off by force; but for you, no

tent-rope for Qays would have been stretched in their land.

bands rushed headlong toward your palace,

So they witnessed the ways of a court where

earnestness sells and frivolity finds no buyers.

Whoever has seen him dispatch the battalions finds no

help in letters, though they rally to defend him.

as keen-edged swords cannot restrain it.

Acts of kindness with which you have so often clothed

those whom your long spears stripped bare.

Hardships have refined them for you; and were it

not for fire, gold would never be purified.

poetry, and orations glory in his name.

How many a herd you won, whose fawns were guarded—

white fawns—there by armies, not by herds.

feet slipped in fear and knees knocked together.

slayer, by their own ruling, is entitled to the spoils.

Why does he withhold what is due? One

like the Commander of the Armies cannot be despoiled.

O chosen one of the realm, every favor

is ascribed to you and obtained from you.

    his noble forefathers never reached.

And restore to him his father's inheritance:

the Arabs will turn their reins toward him.

It is among the strangest things that

sovereignty should lie scattered, while its title is kept.
