    مَن ماتَ قَلباً لَم تَعِش أَضغانُهُ

    Do not fear the hostility of one whose honor you have made fair game;

the grudges of one dead at heart do not survive.

Leave him as a target for the calamities of time.

Do you think it will honor one whose abasement you desire?

And if you desire the ruin of a kingdom that has rebelled

in folly, your dispatch of a banner heralds that ruin.

Indeed, whoever loved his life has obeyed you

there, while a traitor's rebellion drove him to persist.

Let the Romans seek safe-conduct, for there have appeared

to them a keen sword's harshness and gentleness.

Sleep has forsaken their eyelids since they roused

one whose eyelids will not close upon a mote.

Such is resolve: Time's heart is terrified by it,

and the army's horsemen devour the foes.

His swords have guaranteed his opponents' destruction,

so his ashwood spears have made his enemies' lives bitter.

And kings indeed rose high in honor; divided

among them in former times were his lands.

They boasted of them; he deemed himself above them

since acquiring them, for their governors are his young servants.

Thus the armies are led and commanded

by Banjutakin, their emir, and his Tughan.

And God brought them on their heels,

so that his bounty might overflow beyond theirs.

His threats do the work of their swords,

and his pools overflow like their seas.

Rain cannot replace him, yet often

the clouds have gone, and his fingers have taken their place.

Distinction is won by the one whose merit comes first,

not by the one whose era and age come first.

Who can vie with him, when his arrow wins the highest share,

even if his age comes after the prophets?

Let the kings of the factions know that he

is a celestial sphere whose turning entails their dispossession.

Then why did his Turks protect their Turks,

and why did his black troops protect their black troops?

O you who single-handedly shield Islam

from upheavals whose horror turns its children gray!

Your qualities need no witness's testimony,

thanks to glory whose proof, by your life, is clear.

You have gained virtues that cannot be denied,

and the dawn cannot be concealed:

a cheerful countenance whose flash heralds wealth,

    like lightning, whose flash points toward humankind;

and bounty whose forms you have reserved for praise,

    whose branches shade mankind's hopes.

    Wealth remains with no possessor

unless the children of hope are its treasurers.

As for your equal among humankind, he

has never existed, nor can he exist.

    كُلٌّ سِواكَ يَقولُ أَينَ مَكانُهُ

    On glory's path, none but you knows the way;

all but you ask, 'Where does it lie?'

So you have done what humankind was powerless to do,

and understood what baffled their understanding.

And you have coupled pilgrimage with the campaign that,

without you, its men could never have made possible.

And you spent red gold to send them forth,

in days when they could scarcely obtain it.

So your God's victory comes swiftly to you,

and His good pleasure awaits you later with Him.

It is a benefaction whose praise remains yours

among mankind, as long as Hira's spurs remain with it.

The House gives thanks for it when pilgrims circle it,

in the pilgrims' season, and its corners are kissed.

May God then answer for you the prayer of a pilgrim joining Hajj and Umrah,

whose Qur'an recitation there follows his combined pilgrimage.

And may you live on for the lord through whom

his days have been ennobled and his years prolonged,

until you see his army many times the size of yours,

and his young men make up most of those in it.

Why should I not extol you lavishly and at length,

when poetry is a noble steed, and my mind its racecourse?

Rather, how could I deny what a hand has bestowed on me,

whose bounty yields wealth both virgin and mature?

So listen to your praiser, whose verse enfolds

none but you when his collection is folded shut.

Among Eve's children there is, for me, no other

whose bounty is hoped for and whose withholding feared.

Thus my hope turns aside from all but you,

and toward you its trot follows its full-speed rush.

Eid has praised you for the piety

for which its Ramadan praised you before it.

So enjoy it, and live safe, your might triumphant

forever, for the sovereignty of right guidance is its sovereignty.
