فأنكرَso failed to recognize القلبُthe heart منin لمياءَLamya ماwhat عرفاit had known
Youth betrayed me, and time turned and veered away.
Youth has departed and the days of my life have turned,
So the heart no longer recognized in Lamya what it once had known.
So my heart no longer knows the familiarity it once knew.

They are two companions in love; this is their parting.
They were two beloved things - my passion for them,
No one willingly parts from one they have grown fond of.
Never does a man willingly part from one he loves.
لاno والوصالby union ولاand may not بلغتُI attain عودتهُits return
وربماand perhaps عادreturned ماضٍwhat has passed بعدafter ماhaving انصرفاdeparted
No, by union—and may I never regain it,
Neither is union possible, nor can I attain its return,
though what has passed may return after departing—
And sometimes the past returns after having gone.

أوor راقbecame pleasant ماءُthe water of حياةٍlife بعدهafter it وصفاand became clear
if safety's shade or hope's fruit ever delights me,
For me is the sweetness of secure shade or hoped-for shelter,
or the water of life grows pleasant and clear after it.
Or fresh drink of life thereafter described.
ياalas للفؤادfor the heart المعَّىtormented (unclear spelling) منby هوىًlove ونوىًand separation
انفقتI spent دمعيmy tears علىupon أيَّامهاits days سرفاextravagantly
Alas for the heart tormented by love and separation!
Oh my heart laden with passion and purpose -
I squandered my tears upon its days.
I have spent my tears on her days excessively.

Indeed, my soul is smitten; will a time come
Indeed my soul has burdened itself, so will there be a time
to wipe away, with reunion's palm, that stain of passion?
That will clear with palm-wine that burden?

وأسترُand I conceal البرحthe anguish منهfrom it حلَّdescended فانكشفاand so was revealed
How often I hide my longing, while my eyelids reveal it!
How much anguish I conceal, though my eyelids reveal it,
And I hide the anguish that came of it, yet it stands revealed.
And I hide my sorrow lest it be unveiled.

ولاnor تشكيتI complained of ذاتthe wearer of الشّنفthe earring والشَّنفاand hatred
And many a season of union brought me no discontent,
And many a day of union I was not angered by,
nor did I complain of the earring-wearer or of hatred.
Nor did I complain of intimacy and closeness.

What harm if my madness for the miserly one had sought mercy,
My confusion would not harm by being stingy if I sought pasture,
and my tears for the bracelet-wearer had ceased?
Oh my tears, by being halted if they halted.

I spend the night weeping like bereaved mothers, when
I refused to cry the crying of bereft women when
the lightning smiles in its heights and gleams.
Lightning smiled in its loftiness and retreated.

Yes; after its youthful passion, nothing stirred my heart
Yes, and nothing distressed my heart after its youth
like the doves of the grove—may they never coo!
Like the cooing of the doves that did not shout.

It yearns for softness in the boughs that befriend it;
It longs for tenderness in the branches, befriending it,
it will lack softness and slenderness in the boughs.
But will lack tenderness in the branches and twigs.

وقلَّand few are منthose who حاربfought الأيَّامthe days فانتصفاand so won redress
Who can win me the peace I hope for from time?
If only I had a ladder of days I could hope in
And few who fought time ever won their due.
While few who fought against the days came out victorious.

لاnot أسألI ask الدهرtime إلاَّexcept for ردَّthe return of ماwhat سلفاhas passed
No future thing remains whose pursuit would gladden the soul.
No coming remains that would please the soul in its quest;
I ask time for nothing but the return of what has passed.
I ask of fate only to restore what is past.

دمعٌtears إذاwhen ماemphatic particle انكفىturned away صوبthe downpour of الحياrain وكفاand streamed
May the haunts of my sorrows be watered—may they never fade—
It quenched the meadows of my passions, and no tears
by tears that stream whenever the rain's downpour ceases.
Poured when the serpent withdrew towards the cliff and sufficed.

Dwellings before my eyes and in my thoughts alike,
Encampments rise before my eyes and my conscience together,
and Yusuf has gone far from them—oh, my sorrow!
While Joseph has moved far from them, oh what a pity!
