This is the racecourse of love and separation.
This is the arena of love and separation
So race within it the swift coursers of the eyes.
Where the forerunners of desires race
فلقاءُfor meeting الأحبابloved ones مثلlike لقاءthe clash of الحرwar (beginning)

For meeting loved ones is like the clash of battle
The meeting of loved ones is like the meeting of eyes
Between hearts and eyes.
Between hearts and eyelids

And contemplate, between the howdahs and the ruins,
Contemplate between the tents and ruins
The places among them where lovers fall slain.
The battlegrounds of passionate lovers

For bows send forth, though they have no bowstrings,
A tough, fair-skinned beauty who aims
Arrows that kill outright, without nocks.
Arrows that strike true without blinking

I am smitten with a fair woman who acts like a dusky lance,
A white-skinned beauty acted like a brown-skinned
One that bends among the tall, slender spears.
Who swayed from the tall, slender date palms

Her hair adorned her figure, just as
The branch adorned her neck like
Supple boughs are adorned with leaves.
The leaves adorned the tender twigs

If the doves could, they would lay upon it
If only the pigeons could bear it
The collars they wear about their necks.
They would shed their bracelets upon her

I made my heart's inmost core serve her beauty,
My heart served her beauty faithfully
So it cannot find the paths of escape.
Yet she cannot find the path of fidelity

وسمومand the scorching wind of الشموسthe suns بالإشراقِwith their rising
What sun is this, whose setting brings me a scorching wind,
What sun with its setting brings me poison
Though suns' scorching winds come with their rising?
While the sun's poison is in its rising

Whenever she is addressed about my heart's imprisonment,
Whenever she is reproached for capturing my heart
She signs an order for my tears' release.
She signs for the tears to flow free

Whether I scatter upon my cheek
And what she strings above her collarbones.
Or string together over pages

She laughed at the description of my longing, and did not
She laughed at the description of my passion
Know that weeping belongs to longing.
Not knowing tears are for longing

Before I saw her face, I did not know
Before her face I had no knowledge
That beauty's water could burn.
That the water of beauty is for burning

Is there a protector from the darkness? For it is a child
Is there any shelter from the darkness?
That has not grown gray from estrangement and separation.
He is but a child not yet weaned from separation

It dragged on until I thought the far-ranging stars
It was so long I thought the stars in the horizon
Were in fetters, so slow was their course.
Moved slowly in their orbits

And a faint glimmer grows, just as
And the dim twinkle grew as the falling
A fire-striker's spark races through tinder.
Embers quickened in the blaze

So if dawn could receive bounty, it would be bestowed
If only the dawn could help, I would give it
By Yusuf's two hands, even in poverty.
The hand of Joseph with the wine cup
