The slender-waisted one, his sash lying slack, has

No knowledge of his lover or his reproaches.

Like a branch swaying among the leaves of gauzy robes,

And a full moon unveiled among the stars of his sheer garments.

Who will bring me one so near to visit, yet so far,

Among the tribe, whose union is both hoped for and feared?

In longing for the time of closeness and its sweetness,

And grief for youth's companion and intimate friend.

Do you think the dream-vision will aid me, so I may behold

What lies beneath the fold of his face-veil and his gauzy robes?

I am held suspect, though night travel has so often been praised,

For meeting one whose encounters are safe and chaste.

He rises, his cheeks a watering-place for his tribe,

And passes the night with his guests' fire within his breast.

Love has brought together, from his tears and ribs,

His winter quarters and his summer quarters.

Had you been our witness on the evening at Hajir,

As we complained to the tribe's dusky, slender-waisted ones,

You would have wept at my abasement before his beauty's might,

And pitied me, bereft of his kindness.

His body is like water, except that his heart

Is like rock, showing no tenderness to his impassioned lover.

He glories in a temple-lock; had I won his tenderness,

I would not have melted with longing for its curve.

And how lovely the script upon the page of his cheek—

Morning light inscribed its ordered letters with the darkness of night.

Drowsy-eyed, he kept me sleepless with his eyelids' languor,

And my night of longing for him lengthened as it stood still.

Adorned with every kind of beauty, yet without ornaments,

He wore beauty and swayed in its patterned weave.

And he passed round the wine of his cheeks, unmarred by withering,

And is a full moon with neither dark phase nor eclipse.

For his glances between his eyelids seem to be

Al-Aziz's blades, drawn among his ranks.
