أقلُّthe least عنائيmy suffering أنّنيthat I فيهwith him هائمlost in love
وأيسرُand the lightest ماwhat ألقىI endure الدموعُthe tears السواجمُstreaming
The least of my suffering is that I am lost in love with him;
My slightest trouble is that I am infatuated with him
the lightest thing I endure is tears pouring down.
And the easiest thing are the tears flowing copiously
أراقبI await منهfrom him العفوforgiveness والذنبُand the fault ذنبهُhis fault
ويسألand he asks عنّيabout me قومهُhis people وهوwhile he is عالمaware
I await forgiveness from him, though the fault is his;
I watch forgiveness and sin from him, his sin is a sin
he asks his people about me, though he knows.
And his people ask about me while he is knowledgeable
أأغدواmust I greet the morning شجياًsorrowful وهوwhile he is خالٍfree منof الهوىlove
وأسهرand I lie awake منfrom وجدlonging بهfor him وهوwhile he is نائمasleep
Must I greet the morning sorrowful while he is free of love,
Shall I pretend to be amorous while he is free of love
and lie awake with longing for him while he sleeps?
And stay awake out of passion while he is asleep
ويظلمand wrongs قلبيmy heart لحظهُhis glance وهوwhile it is حاكمa judge
فمنso who منصفٌa just arbiter واللحظwhile the glance خصمan adversary وحاكمand a judge
His glance wrongs my heart while serving as judge;
And my heart does him injustice for a moment and he is the judge
who, then, will do justice when the glance is adversary and judge?
So who is equitable and a glance is opponent and judge
وأعجبُand the strangest ماthing فيin الحبlove أنيthat I لبينهat his parting
حزينsorrowful سليمstricken, as by snakebite وهوwhile he is جذلانjoyful سالمunscathed
The strangest thing in love is that, at his parting, I am
And the strangest thing in love is that between us
sorrowful and stricken, while he is joyful and unscathed.
I am sad safe and he is sound safe
أيجزعdoes he despair مقتولone slain ويأمنand feels safe قاتلa slayer
ويخضعand bows low مظلومone wronged ويشمخand stands proud ظالمa wrongdoer
Does the slain one despair while the slayer feels safe,
Does the killed grieve and the killer feel secure
and the wronged bow low while the wrongdoer stands proud?
And the wronged act submissive and the unjust act arrogant
فياso, O زمنيmy days بالجزعat the valley bend هلwill أنتyou عائدreturning
وياand O جؤذرَwild-cow calf الوعساءof the sandy plain هلwill أنتyou راحمmerciful
O my days at the valley bend, will you return?
So O my time, with grief, are you coming back
And O wild-cow calf of the sandy plain, will you show mercy?
And O flogger of the sleepless, are you merciful
فكمfor many a مدنفone wasted by love فيin الحيّthe encampment ينشدُseeks معلماًa landmark
(reading ألا) شدَّgrievously ماhow تجنيwrong عليناagainst us المعالمthe landmarks
How many a love-sick man in the camp seeks a landmark!
How many settled ones in the quarter seek a teacher
Ah, how grievously the landmarks wrong us!
Except the milestones have picked on us
تميلbend لشكواناat our complaint الغصونthe branches تعطفاًout of sympathy
وتندبناand lament us فيin دوحهنَّtheir spreading trees الحمائمthe doves
The branches bend at our complaint in sympathy,
The branches incline to our complaints out of kindness
and the doves lament us in their spreading trees.
And the doves mourn us in their bushes

وهلand are تلكthose طعنdeparting camel-litters (reading ظعن) الحيّof the tribe أمor أناI واهمmistaken
My two friends, have you passed the marker of the protected pasture?
O my friend, did we exceed the limit of passion
And are those the tribe's departing camel-litters, or am I mistaken?
Or is that the stab of love or am I delusional
ديارdwellings بهاin them يصبوgrows lovesick الحليمthe sober-minded man صبابةwith longing
ويسلبand is stolen فيهاin them قلبهhis heart وهوwhile he is حازمresolute
Dwellings where the sober-minded man pines with longing,
An abode where the forbearing pours his drink
and his heart is stolen there, though he is resolute.
And where he loses his heart and he is decisive

فلاthen may not شامbehold برقَthe lightning المشرفيَّةof Mashrafi blades شائمa watcher
Whenever my eyes fail to win a glimpse of them,
Never did my eyes gleam at it with a glance
may no watcher glimpse the lightning of Mashrafi blades,
So there is no late evening glow of Mashrafiyya

nor may languid winds drift through them,
Nor did unhealthy winds blow through it
nor any tender, dew-drenched bān tree sway.
Nor shook a smooth soft branch

Reproach doubles my longing; reproach concerning them
Blame redoubles my passion and the blame is in them
is itself infatuation, and smiling lightning makes me weep.
And grief and flashes of lightning make me weep
فياso, O مقلتيmy eye ماwhat حدّثtold البرقthe lightning عنهمabout them

O my eye, what did the lightning tell of them?
So O my eyelids, what did the lightning tell about them
And O my hearing, what have the reproaching women lodged in you?
And O my hearing, what have the blames deposited in you
سقاmay water اللهGod أيامthe days الصباof youth وأكفpouring (reading واكف) الحياrain
وعهديand my time بهwith it عهدٌa season منof الغيثrain دائمunceasing
May God water the days of youth with pouring rain;
May Allah water the days of youth and palms of life
my time with it was a season of ceaseless rain.
And my promise to him is a lasting rain promise

I stood, while streaming springs flowed from my eye,
I stood and from my eyes are pouring eyes
and its pupil floated in a deep sea of tears.
And their person in the pit of tears is swimming
فماso not كانit was إلاexcept مثلَlike طيفِa phantom مسلّمone offering greetings
لذذتI took pleasure بهin it خلساًfurtively كأنيas though I حالمdreaming
It was only like a phantom offering a greeting;
It was nothing but like the phantom of one bidden farewell
I savored it furtively, as though I were dreaming.
I indulged in him secretly as if I am dreaming

وشأنand the state شؤونيof my tear ducts جلُّmost of ماwhat أناI كاتمconcealing
Leave me, you two, and do not inquire into what I have suffered;
He called me and do not inquire what I found in him
the state of my tear ducts is most of what I conceal.
And the matter of my affairs, most of what I conceal
لئنif indeed رجعتْreturn تلكthose المطيُّriding camels بمنwith those who مضىdeparted
فياthen, oh حبذاhow dear أخفافهاtheir footpads والمناسمand the toe-tips
If those camels return bearing those who departed,
If those riders to whom passed return
oh, how dear their footpads and toe-tips!
So how good their trotting and the farewells

Many a companion I thanked as he approached,
And how many a companion I faced with gratitude
then he turned away, twisting his side, while reviling me.
But he turned to fold his kindness and he curses me

Everyone meets me scowling; yet the reverse:
Everyone meets me frowning while her heart
I stood before the lion, and the lion was smiling.
I stood before the lion and the lion smiling

لدىin الفضلmerit إنindeed اللهGod للفضلof merit قاسمan apportioner
Do people hate me because I surpass them
Do people hate me because I surpassed them
in merit? God indeed apportions merit.
In merit, truly Allah is the divider of merit

I am indeed one who gives a kindness its due;
I am one who gives favour its due
if not, may my resolves betray my heart and tongue!
Else it would betray the slightest determinations

When ignorance beguiles the people's prudent man,
When the ignorant of the people find a learned man
I cut away the disease of ignorance with knowledge.
I counter the disease of ignorance with knowledge decisive
