وزارت فأغنى وابلُ المزن مغناها
She journeyed late at night—may God never make her night-journey distant.
She visited—may the rainclouds' downpour enrich her dwelling.

And they have claimed that parting comes tomorrow;
Then may her mounts not escape unhamstrung.

فقابلتُ منها بدرها وثرياها
Her face shone before my gaze beneath her earring;
So I beheld her full moon and her Pleiades.

May she hear nothing but a dove's lament,
And exchange smiles only with the mouths of lightning.

Her sash sways while her heart is still;
And love's anguish is nothing but the swaying of her sash.

They said, “You were denied patience on the day of Suwayqa.”
They spoke truly—how long my night because of its Layla!

وتبعث وجدي الشمسُ في فلق الضحى
حنيناًin yearning إليهاfor her والمهاةُand the oryx doe وخشفاهاand her two fawns
حنيناً إليها والمهاةُ وخشفاها
And the sun in the breaking light of morning stirs my passion,
In yearning for her—as do the oryx doe and her two fawns.

And that is no wonder in love's kinship,
When her two brothers and her two sisters have maddened me.

My patience and her pledge vanish as a shadow vanishes,
And my heart and her two earrings quiver like a mirage.

I yearn for her eyelids, though they have shed my blood;
Enough that her eyelids are loved, murderous though they are.

And since they severed my heart from its patience,
I have known that her eyes are the two Babylonians.

Whenever al-ʿAmiriyya's flock appears at dawn,
Then beware, O anguish of the heart—beware of her!

And do not avenge me, you two: my gaze, with a glance,
Shot at another on the day of al-ʿUdhayb, but killed her outright.

I am afflicted with one proud of beauty and youth;
And can one who spends the night following a wanderer find the way?

Ah, if only Najd were a wish I could be granted!

At dawn I greeted youth there, a springtime whose days
Were tender at the edges—and budding-breasted maidens, all alike.

How often her phantom visited me in night's dark shelter,
And found me humble-hearted and full of sighs.

Yet never before had I seen embers melt into water.

The breeze's fragrance tells us of her fragrance,
Though some suppose it comes from her lavender.

And how fragrant, were it not for passion—and how dewy!

And O the lasting rage of the spiteful at its passing,
Though they knew nothing of its tidings, while we knew them.

And a night of union—no sooner had I spurred my tears
At its beginning than I stumbled at its end.

In it we sent the messengers of slumber groping through the dark,
And they returned with love's phantoms when we sent them forth.
فقدfor indeed هتفتْcried out تلكthose الهضابُhills منfrom الحياthe rain

For those hills have cried out with the rain,
As though the dew of al-Malik al-Muʿazzam's bounty were enveloping them.
