Her darkness was illuminated by tranquility
but her fragrance and her smile betrayed her.
So her blossoming smile and joy grew

Spreading upon the wings of night are her gentle breezes
and her face-veil is lifted from the light of dawn.
Lifting the veil of dawn from her morning radiance

An oryx—her front teeth like my verse, her words
The softness of her form is like my verse and diction
like my tears: pearls whose string has slipped away.
Her tears for the lost beloved disrupted her composure

She has sweet saliva; but for piety, I would not forbid it,
She has an enchanting grace, if not for piety I'd be entranced
and but for love, its wine would not be lawful to me.
Were it not for passion, her wine I'd never have savored

I disobeyed a woman who blamed me for her, and a reprover,
To her I was obedient, though she was cross
though her rebuke and reproach had once been heeded.
And her rebuke and blame I calmly accepted

By God, my heart was hers to dwell in forever
me; and an eye—even its sleep is estrangement.

her fleeting visits have indeed deceived—save within hearts [wording unclear].
Indeed, she seduced only hearts with her beauty

I shall endure, whether it is lifted or persists.

all others, and revives the soul whose death has been decreed.

His awe spread throughout the earth - security followed him
so its grazing herds feared nothing but his blades.
So none feared but those who would oppose his authority

The horizon of the exalted rises after its setting because of him
and its withers and hump, his alone among mankind.
While he remains beyond the heavens and their summit

If another is called sovereign before this lord
then rainless clouds have been counted among heaven's clouds.
He is but a cloud bursting from the stormy sky

to those seeking his bounty, downpours and streaming rain.
While for those who seek refuge, they are serene and harmonious

the rain-bringing stars would mean nothing without their gentle showers.
Without his spears, the heavens are incomplete

Nobles who in life had lofty souls
suns of morning, bright-faced and handsome.

its arrows are the pouring torrent.
