فالدَّوحُfor the great trees راياتهُits banners خفاقةfluttering العذبِthe tassels
Set the steeds of youth galloping in the playground of delight;
Urge the boy's steeds to gallop in the arena of play.
for the great trees are its banners, with tassels fluttering.
For the great trees' banners have fluttering tassels.
ومبسمُand the smiling mouth of الصبحdawn زانتهُadorned it كواكبهُits stars
كماas يزيَّنis adorned ثغراُthe mouth of الكأسthe cup بالحببwith bubbles
Dawn’s smiling mouth is adorned by its stars,
And dawn's smiling mouth is adorned by its stars,
as bubbles adorn the goblet’s smiling rim.
as the cup's mouth is adorned with bubbles.
وانهضْand rise لأيَّامكfor your days اللاتيwhich تسرُّyou rejoice بهاin them
فإنْfor if مضىpasses يومُa day لهوٍof amusement عنكaway from you لمnot يؤبreturn
Rise, then, to meet those days of yours that bring delight;
And rouse yourself for those days of yours in which you rejoice;
for if a day of pleasure passes you by, it never returns.
for if a day of pleasure passes you by, it will not return.

The breeze, too, makes signs whose true meanings
And the breeze has gestures whose true meanings
are understood from the ben-tree’s boughs and the dunes.
are understood from the bān boughs and the dunes.
والطيرُand the birds فوقَabove فروعِthe branches of الأيكِthe grove صادحةٌsinging
صدحَthe song of المشوقِthe yearning lover إلىfor أحبابهhis loved ones الغيبُabsent
Above the grove’s branches, the birds sing aloud,
And the birds sing above the branches of the grove,
like a yearning lover singing to his absent beloveds.
the song of one yearning for his absent loved ones.
شمّرgird yourself فإنيfor indeed I حلبتُI have milked الدَّهرَtime أشطرهُits teats
فلمyet did not أنلI obtain راحةًrest إلاَّexcept علىthrough تعبtoil
Brace yourself: I have milked Time from both its udders,
Gird yourself, for I have milked time's every teat,
and found no rest except after toil.
yet found no rest except through toil.

ماthat which كانwas إسنادهُits chain of transmission أدنىnearest إلىto الكذبfalsehood
Hopes have tales, and sweetest among them
And hopes have tales, and the sweetest of them
is the one whose chain of transmission lies closest to falsehood.
is the one whose chain of transmission comes nearest to falsehood.

أخوa brother to الغوانيbeautiful women ضعيفُweak العهدِloyalty والسببand attachment
Youth indeed—do not be deceived by its companionship—
Indeed, youth—do not be deceived by its company—
is the beauties’ brother, frail in promise and fidelity.
is brother to beautiful women, weak in loyalty and attachment.
ولاand let not يصدَّكَdeter you عنfrom شيءٍanything ترفَّعهُits loftiness
فطالماfor often صارbecame ورداًdrinking water نازحُthe far-off السُّحبclouds
Let no lofty goal deter you by the height to which it rises:
And let no thing's loftiness deter you from it;
how often a place far from rainclouds has become a watering place.
for many a far-off cloud has become water to drink.
لمnot يشرفِgain distinction الدرُّthe pearl لولاwere it not for هجرُleaving موطنهِits home
والبدرُand the full moon ماnot تمَّbecame full حتىuntil جدَّstrove earnestly فيin الطلبthe quest
Pearls would never be prized but for leaving their homeland,
The pearl would not have gained distinction had it not left its home,
nor did the full moon become complete until it strove in quest.
and the full moon did not reach fullness until it strove in its quest.
ياah! عذَّبَmay torment اللهُGod قلبيmy heart كمhow often أجاذبهُI tug at it
إلىtoward النجاةِdeliverance ويعدوهاand it races past it إلىtoward العطبdestruction
Ah, may God torment this heart of mine—how fiercely I struggle with it,
Ah, may God torment my heart! How often I tug at it
toward salvation, while it outruns me toward ruin.
toward deliverance, while it races past it toward destruction.

Your consuming passion wanders through every valley and races,
It wanders in every valley in anguish, and has run
after every graceful beauty, honey-sweet of dusky lips and fresh of teeth—
with every supple youth whose dusky lips are honey-sweet and teeth cool and bright,

تموهُplates الفضةَthe silver البيضاءَwhite بالذَّهبwith gold
love-drunk, he fears my reproach, so I make him blush,
intoxicated, fearing my reproach; so his blush
and the white silver becomes overlaid with gold.
plates white silver with gold.
هوىًpassion يلذُّdelights وإنeven if ساءتturned bad عواقبهُits consequences
كماas تلذُّdelights وتؤذيand hurts حكَّةthe itch of الجربscabies
Passion is sweet, though its consequences turn bitter,
A passion that delights, though its consequences are evil,
just as the itch of mange both pleases and hurts.
as the itch of scabies both delights and hurts.

لمَّاwhen تلبَّسَclothed itself طلقُclear الماءِwater باللَّهبin flame
On an overcast day, the drinkers’ hands behold a marvel,
And on an overcast day, the drinkers' hands held a miracle,
when the limpid water clothes itself in flame.
when clear water clothed itself in flame.

والأكمُand the hills سافرةٌunveiled عنrevealing منظرٍa sight عجبwondrous
The eyelids of the life-giving rain weep while the rose smiles,
The eyelids of rain wept, so the lowlands smiled,
and the hills, unveiled, disclose a wondrous prospect.
and the hills unveiled a wondrous sight.

لوif أنّهُthat it لفراقِat parting from السحبِthe clouds لمnot يذبmelt
The pearl of dew enhances the worth of its counterpart—
And what is likened to dew's pearls would rise in worth,
if only it did not melt when the clouds part.
if the dew did not melt away at parting from the clouds.

Whenever the hand of any beauty reaches for it
When any beautiful woman's hand takes it unawares,
to adorn her necklace, it neither grasps it nor comes away empty-handed.
to adorn her jewelry, it neither succeeds nor fails.
وقدand already ترفَّعَrose ضوءُthe light of الصبحِdawn فيalong صعدٍan upward path
لماwhen تحدّرَdescended جنحُthe wing of الليلِnight فيdown صببa slope
Now dawn’s light has climbed an ascending path,
And dawn's light had risen along an upward path,
as night’s wing descended a downward slope.
when night's wing descended down a slope.

The lightning and the lofty cloud—you would take them
And lightning, with the lofty storm cloud pelting it,
for battle-dust around al-Nasir’s keen, slender swords.
is like dust around al-Nasir's keen swords.
