O traces of homes at al-Liwa and dwelling places,

May the morning showers of every spring water you.

We stood there between an eye with a tattered

Banner, and a heart rent by passion.

Two flashes—from an earring and a cloud's lightning—

And two downpours—from clouds above them and from tears.

The tale-bearers truly did not know what I love,

And how could they know my anguish and my ardor?

I have indeed paid that trust its due,

And entrusted love's secret to one who would not divulge it.

And I rejected the guiding stars of my gray hair,

Though they had risen from my locks in a watch of the night.

And you are nothing but the sun, whose radiance hides

The stars of night that have heralded their rising.

And if she counts a sin for which love intercedes,

There is no good in affection that comes with an intercessor.

And if patience defies me on the day I meet her,

I greet her with an obedient one among my tears.

A stranger in love, I love one of rare beauty,

Though my beloved dwells within my heart and ribs.

Nor was Lamya unaware that her bedfellow,

When defilement is feared, is the best of bedfellows.

Covetous desires beset him from every direction,

Swiftly, and call to one who will not listen.

And on a night of longing I was the knight of its darkness,

Until its Eagle stooped to alight.

None but a close friend won my affection, nor were

My abasement and submission for anyone but a beloved.

Though I was in a night of sorrow—were there to travel

Through it a phantom of love, it would find no way back.

Nor did I taste the flavor of sleep unmixed, for I

Mixed the slumber from my eye with tears.

You two, straighten the pale camels' breasts; I am no supplicant,

Nor, after her, will I keep ties with one who severs them.

I struck the riding camels' shins out of longing

For a bright-browed, eminent scion of kings.
