O my dear friend, sincere in

affection: I yearn for my dear friend.

We have ridden out to capture our wishes,

on one outstripping the whip, straining against the bit.

A black steed like darkness; offered to the heart

are its hands, like the palm of Moses.

    Wild-hearted, when bridled by the

wind, toward the goal of a noble station.

So seize delight while it thrives; for today

has an ailing breeze, making it possible.

Before the east wind lifts from the face

of the sun on its horizon the veil of clouds.

For the cupbearers—full moons beneath the sky of the

great trees—move about with blossoms of stars.

Each red draught in the cup I liken

to nothing but the fire of Abraham.

So the daughters of the vines are more fitting—even if they are

    forbidden—for every gallant, generous man.
