O king, the edifice of glory now stands,

its pillars held firm by your name.

You have held back from me, while the hands of

calamities take from me and leave nothing.

Rebuff has indeed spilled from my cheek

blood that was never shed in your presence.

Who, then, now obtains his wishes from you?

For I seek, but do not attain.

Indeed, the base man has striven in vain—the one who says:

"Your wealth is the most useful thing you own."

And here is your father: he obeyed generosity,

and came to hold fast to God.

No believer, then, lacked his bounty,

and no polytheist escaped fear of him.

His enemies spent the night, for fear of

destruction, weeping, while his swords laughed.

And my praise in this age is not

a thing woven or tightly interlaced.

Rather, it is honor to be acquired,

and the least of it is a jewel to be strung.

Friendship endures, while gifts—far be it

from you—are the first things to perish.

I seek protection for you from any path other than

generosity; that other path is for others, not you.

One like you is he whose hand, with bounty,

gives life, and whose sword slays.

You give freely, and your bounty gleams white,

and the battlefield grows black with your dust.

How often has generosity preserved a man's honor,

which he bought while his wealth was depleted.

And for whoever dons praise as closely woven mail,

there is neither unraveling nor tearing.

So return to the poor, mend the broken, and those

    whom wearisome Time has oppressed.

For prayer is nothing but a shield

for one who fears God or practices devotion.

These are the words of a youth; anyone else is a liar,

and anyone but you is deceived in the counsel he receives.
