My heart is enthralled and lovesick for the white heights of honor,
My heart roves, enraptured by the heights of glory,
And my eye sheds tears, but not for dusky oryx.
And an eyelid that does not rest upon the evening’s dusk.
شجيتُI was grieved بالبينby separation عنfrom أهلٍfamily وعنand from وطنٍa homeland
ناءٍdistant وغيريand someone other than me شجاهgrieved him الدلُّcoquetry والهيفand slenderness
I have grieved at parting from family and from a homeland
I complain of separation from loved ones and homeland,
Far away, while another is grieved by coquetry and slenderness.
Moaning, while others are torn by yearning and sorrow.
أعاتبُI reproach الدهرَTime فيماconcerning what ساءwas bad منof خلقٍcharacter
منهfrom it فينكرُso it denies أحياناًsometimes ويعترفand admits
I reproach Time for the evil traits
I blame fate for the evils of creation,
It shows: sometimes it denies them, sometimes admits them.
Then it denies, while at times admitting.

And what keen sword has not been covered in rust
What polished sword is there that rust hasn’t touched,
At some time—and what full moon is never eclipsed?
Or full moon not obscured and eclipsed?

I watch hope's lightning, with no rain beside it
I see a lightning flash of hope, lifeless,
To be hoped for, and I bend a flank that will not bend.
Hope itself, while compassion shows no tenderness.

نتيجةُoutcome الحبِّlove فرطexcess الوجدpassionate longing والأسفand sorrow
And I seek what is withheld; its outcome
I seek the unattainable, its consequence
Is love's outcome: excessive longing and sorrow.
The consequence of love: intense passion and grief.
وربَّand many a ذيone with كلفٍinfatuation لاno حظّgood fortune يبهجهdelights him
لكنَّهbut he كلفٌinfatuated فيon وجههhis face كلفdark blotches
And many a man in love has no good fortune to delight him,
How often difficult endeavors bring no joy,
Yet he is infatuated, with dark blotches on his face.
Yet still we toil on, in lifelong hardship.

فيin الحبِّlove أحورُa dark-eyed one فيon أجفانهhis eyelids وطفlong, thick lashes
And sometimes my flank was stirred, after its hardness
Then, after harshness, his compassion stirs me,
In love, by a dark-eyed one with long, thick lashes on his lids.
In love I blink my eyes, longing for a glance.

When he bends his form in the midst of his visit,
When he bends his tall frame in the crooked lane,
Then the two comforters suffice me: the beloved and the letter alif.
My friends are just closeness and familiarity.
ماnot لذَّةpleasure الحبِlove إلاexcept المنعُrefusal يحجبهveils it
وبهجةُand the charm الحسنbeauty إلاَّexcept اللينُsuppleness والقصفand fragility
Love's pleasure is only the refusal that veils it,
Love’s sweetness is but denial that hides it,
And beauty's charm is only suppleness and fragility.
Beauty’s delight but soft speech and kind manner.

When he gazes and sets about swaying his slender spear,
When he sings and acts reserved, it shakes her who fades,
The two slayers resemble each other: the glance and the spear-tip.
Alike are the flirt and the open coquette.

All about him is pleasing, except his censurer's censure;
In him seems fair only the blame of the blamer -
Yes—and arrogance is ugly, except in him.
Yes, and ugly only sincere advice for him.

O friend, my soul has never clung to anything precious
My friend, why have I engaged my soul with one
Without estrangement or far-off separation intervening.
Who only brings estrangement or intends rejection?
فاصبرْso be patient وإنand even if جارتacted unjustly الأيَّامthe days جاهدةًstriving hard
منfrom دوحةa spreading tree الصَّبرpatience يجنىis harvested المجدglory والشرفand honor
So be patient, even if the days do their utmost to wrong you;
So be patient, though days oppress bitterly,
From patience's spreading tree, glory and honor are gathered.
From the harbor of patience come glory and honor.

We hope; they are feared; they give to us and deprive us—
Our days give and deny, hope and fear,
Our days; in this way our forebears passed on.
Thus has it been for generations long passed.
