May the returning rain water the bond I have in al-Jazira,

though it has yielded only yearning and love's anguish.

I yearn for Hind—but can my thirst be quenched,

and my heart's torment eased, by saying, 'I yearn for Hind'?

She is the sun, spreading shade when she is near,

and becomes scorching noonday heat when distance hides her.

    ومن شربَ الصهباءَ يلزم بالحدِّ

    I was punished by her eyelids for sipping her saliva;

and whoever drinks tawny wine incurs the prescribed penalty.

Indeed, grief's fire lies hidden in its clear, sweet water,

as fire's fierce heat lies hidden in a cold fire-stick.

So, heart, patiently forgo her sweet saliva,

for swift-killing poison lies in that honey.

She is the farthest paradise; its bliss has fled,

so my heart abides forever in the fire of sorrow.

    وكيف تنالُ الشمسُ بالأعين الرُّمد

    And copious tears have inflamed my eyes;

and how can the sun be reached with inflamed eyes?

    فلمْ أيعنتْ في الصدر رمانة النّهد

    And the pomegranate blossom of her cheek has not yet faded;

so why has the pomegranate of her breast ripened upon her chest?

She shows you oryxes in her glance, the sun in her radiance,

and a dune of spears in her hips, a bough in her figure.

The full moon in darkness is nothing but her brow

and the jet-black, curling hair she has let fall.

So, you two, do not marvel at beauty both black and white:

for it is said: each opposite's beauty is revealed by the other.

I say to her valley, whose plants have spread,

its greenness like the down upon a cheek,

and the mouths of the daisies have kept smiling

at the clouds' lovely weeping, stirred by thunder's clamor,

and lightning's gleam has shone through their rifts,

like a sword drawn beneath a banner's two wings,

and the clouds' bow has loosed its arrows,

so every pool, its flanks swaying, is clad in mail:

"I see you have spread brocade in every direction,

as though you had a promised meeting with al-Aziz."
