    May God water a dwelling in Alexandria,

    where I donned the robe of separation, its sleeve embroidered.

    فلو وافقوا سمَّيته صيقل الذهن

    The passing of her breeze polished the rust from minds;

    so, were they to agree, I would call it the mind's burnisher.

    For her interior is free of impurity and harm,

    and her exterior gleams with beauty's brocade.

    Hers is the sea, before which its whale's eye is downcast,

    and the feet of ships stumble in its surging waves.

    Her lighthouse, to the eye, is the handiwork of humankind,

    but, to the mind, it is the handiwork of the jinn.

    Nor is lightning's flash there a passing rain cloud

    that wept for her; instead, it came to her laughing, teeth bared.

    ولكن علا خدَّ الدُّنى خجلُ المدن

    Nor is the reddened twilight glow a sign of the sun;

    rather, the cities' shame has spread over the cheek of the worlds.
