    والشّمسُ ترقمُ والسحائبُ تحبكُ

    Look at spring's fabric and its weaving;

And the sun embroiders, while the clouds weave.

And the earth is unveiled in robes of fine silk,

And the river is a sleeve, rumpled by the breeze.

Where the faces of the land are unveiled,

And the daisies there are laughing mouths.

So our minds, the pastures, are unveiled,

And our hearts, the brides, are possessed.

And the expanse of that sky is scented with ambergris,

And the breeze of that air is perfumed with musk from it.

And the dew is strung on the necks of the boughs,

And scattered over the plains, unstrung.

As though camphor had been crumbled among its spreading trees,

Or fine white flour sprinkled over the plants.

How much silver is scattered across its gravelly plains,

In fragments, and gold dust—if only it could be fashioned and cast!

How strange: you fear poverty or hope for wealth,

While your hands take and leave whatever you wish.

So abandon reproaching the nights, and [unclear as written],

The blood of a vine, spilled at a wedding of revelry.

Humankind has resented time and its vicissitudes,

And people's approval is a goal that cannot be attained.

And the world's end, and the final lot of its people,

Are dominion that vanishes, and a people's veil torn away.

How many a pleasure in it is mingled with humiliation,

A wish is worn down by death.

It tastes sweet, then brings displeasure—a choking pang and bitterness,

And it is loved, though it assails and slays us.

So marvel at this world: a moving thing

Is encountered, while a living being perishes amid it all.
