I yearn for the shade of al-ʿAqīq in the protected pasture,

with the longing of she-camels watered every fifth day, circling the watering place.

And I long for Nuʿmān of the arāk trees; I am not

the first yearning lover to sigh from passion.

Peace be upon Najd; and from love's searing fire

and its anguish comes my saying: 'Peace be upon Najd.'

Our loved ones, at the dune there is nothing for an inquirer

who stops there but lovesickness and sleeplessness.

You guarded your spears with slender forms, and defended

the lions with gazelles on the morning we met.

And I had lived on hopes; then you stripped away

there, the veil of feigned affection from rejection's face,

the morning we whispered farewell, and there sped

toward us the eyes of spiteful foes, deliberately.

So I saw only a lovesick sufferer's palm

upon a liver, or a weeper's tears upon a cheek.

    وأي حياة لا تنغص بالفقد

    I loved you as I loved life in youth;

and what life is not embittered by loss?

And if the long lapse of time has made you forget love,

nothing has stirred my sorrows but the remoteness of bygone days.
