I see the rain across the horizons, clumsy of hand,

Yet in Jilliq it is deft of hand.

Its fingertips bestowed upon her the likes of necklaces,

    Some strung together, others scattered.

And it gave generously there, as a generous man gives his wealth,

Thinking that wealth would not endure forever.

So it lay with every soft, level tract within her,

And clasped hands with every slender, supple one of hers.

So lightning's blade bears no rust in her sky,

Nor is any stretch of earth in her precincts thirsty.

Where darkness and the full moon, with lightning around it,

Are like a Zanj man's helmet bowing before an Indian blade.

And when farewell drew near, it opened its bags,

And granted favors as an affectionate departing traveler does.

Then it strung rubies and ornaments [the intervening words are unclear].

And blanketed the earth's back with carpets of peridot.
