أحاجيكم ما ناطقٌ نجلُ مفحمٍ
فصيحٍeloquent أبوهُhis father منfrom قبيلthe stock of الأعاجمِnon-Arabs
فصيحٍ أبوهُ من قبيل الأعاجمِ
I pose you a riddle: what speaker is the son of a speechless one,
Eloquent, with a father of non-Arab stock?
حقيرٌlowly إذاwhen تعزوهُyou trace his lineage وهوyet he is مفضلٌesteemed
حقيرٌ إذا تعزوهُ وهو مفضلٌ
إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle سألناwe ask عنهُabout him أهلthe people of العواصمthe capitals
إذا ما سألنا عنهُ أهل العواصم
Lowly when you trace his lineage, yet esteemed
When we ask the people of the capitals about him.
يلوحhe appears لناto us فيin صورةٍa form آدميةhuman
يلوح لنا في صورةٍ آدمية
وليسand he is not علىwith التحقيقcertainty منof نسلthe offspring of آدمAdam
وليس على التحقيق من نسل آدم
He appears to us in human form,
Yet in truth he is not of Adam’s offspring.
لهhe has شبهُthe likeness of إنسانٍa human إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle رأيتهُyou see him
له شبهُ إنسانٍ إذا ما رأيتهُ
فإنbut if نسبوهُthey trace his lineage فهوthen he is إحدىone of البهائمthe beasts
فإن نسبوهُ فهو إحدى البهائم
He bears a human likeness when you see him,
But if they trace his lineage, he is one of the beasts.
