How can I stand by the traces of one who has departed,

when I have no tears to spare for the ruined campsite?

The protected pasture's ravines are empty of their people, and

the backs of full-grown she-camels have laid their valley bottoms waste.

    وأيُّ ليلٍ على العشَّاق لم يطلِ

    I swear, my night has grown long, though it is short;

and what night has not grown long for lovers?

A hillside's face stirred my longing—how often there I sipped

sweet fruit of pleasure in the throats of late afternoons.

Time wrongs me, yet its promises content me,

while nothing lies in my hand but hope.

I am the captive of a night that watched over my learning,

then gave me burning thirst in place of fetters.

    Sorrow's hangover afflicted me beyond

the endurance of my strength; joy's intoxication passed me by.

What a steed, by God, that cannot reach a goal!

And every courser is short of reach over long distances.

They faulted me—though I have no control over events—

for losing heart, though I have no power against Time.

    وهل يعاب الحسام العضب بالفللِ

    No wonder its calamities have notched my patience;

is a keen-edged sword disgraced by notches?

If people knew what fate is, there would be no grief

for a coward's mother, nor joy for a hero's brother.

How often I came by night to a fire's glow, determined to reach it!

Journeying by resolve surpasses journeying on camels.

And the radiant stars kept vigil in the darkness,

like the eyes of wide-eyed beauties framed in kohl.

Umama said, "He never ceases to brave

    a fair woman's cheek or a lance-slender figure!

Have you not feared the men of the clan?" I told her,

"The courage of love [apparently intended] needs no stratagems.

Nor do I fear a sword, so long as I turn to

a sword of resolve, within the armor of my allotted span."

If you could see her, having cast off her necklaces

in slumber, you would see adornment in being unadorned.

Fair-skinned, radiant in color—when she unveils,

the rose's cheeks grow crimson with shame.

Thirsty-waisted, with well-watered haunches, she combines

eagerness to pursue desires with languor.

Since God fashioned her, how often have envious women fashioned for me,

from a wealth of blame, earrings of reproach!

Indeed, I am smitten with love for her, as al-

Kindi was with praise, and lovers with reproach.
