وعريت ساحاتها والأعطان
Hind's dwellings have lain desolate for ages.
And their courtyards and camel-resting grounds lie bare

Of every mature she-camel and swift, plaintive camel.
And their moringa trees and dunes have turned pale.

أنس المقيمين وزادُ الركبان
Tales of those who settled there and those who once lived there
Are the residents' solace and the riders' provisions.

And each day time has some business with us.
How distant they are, though neighbors to my heart!

As though I, in the dwelling after its people have gone,
Were traces of sleep in a sleepless man's eyelids.

How many a moringa branch departed among those leaving at dawn,
For whose sake the neighbor acted unjustly and both brothers proved false.

خفناً الوشاة والبكا قد خان
What joy is there in youthful love unless it is proclaimed?
We feared the tale-bearers, but weeping had already betrayed us.
