فكانso he was أبهاهماthe fairer of the two منfrom ليلةthe night of الشَّعرthe hair
He traveled by night and drew near, the moon following in his wake.
And he was the fairer of the two, shining from the night of his hair.

Dawn rises in the pitch-darkness of his forelock,
while night knows nothing of his dawn.

Where the Milky Way is a watering place hard to reach,
and the bright stars along its edges are blossoms.

Supple of limb, yet stern when I entreat him;
his body is water, but his heart is stone.

فليسso there is no ليfor me منهُfrom him وزرٌsin لاno ولاnor وزرrefuge
I remain chaste toward him, though his glances tempt me;
so I have no sin from him—no, nor any refuge.

I would not have known, but for his eye's deeds,
that glances are swords with which dark-eyed beauty beguiles.

In his eyes is sickness, yet in him lies the cure;
and within his two sashes is a branch that will not bend.

When he appears, from the rose of his cheek you could almost
wring beauty's water with the palm of your gaze.

His slender waist has bestowed leanness upon
my body, and his cool saliva has kindled my burning thirst.

A face: night's full moons pass the night eclipsed
by it, and images prostrate themselves before it in reverence.

Bare-chested among his peers—whenever

How often I have spent the night weeping to him, while he smiles
at me, wronging me in my weakness, while I apologize.

Sleep and the thought I set to work are the two that grant him to me;
and the two that withhold him are modesty of face and bashfulness.

Then he turned, and his smiling mouth restored the dawn,
and night reclaimed what his forelocks had bestowed.

Be gentle, reproacher, with a heart that never recovers from love;
for time's calamity spares nothing and leaves nothing.
