God's peace be upon you from me, for I

miss you as water is missed in a drought-stricken land.

And by God, I shall not forget you as long as the sun rises,

and as long as a friend's tears fall like dew for a friend.

And my brother reproaches me over you, fearing

for me; yet what is reproach beside my longing for you?

And I used to fear bereavement, until you afflicted me

with something more wounding to hearts than bereavement.

And I envy the poor man who spends the night content,

and wealth's equal is he who spends the night with his loved ones united.

And, praise be to God, I have the dignity of contentment,

but the searing pain of longing leaves me abased.

I am thought free, yet my heart is distraught

and fettered by the weight you made me bear.

And I laugh to soothe myself, while sorrow in my breast

and heart works like fire in thick logs.

    فسيَّان عندي حالة الكثر والقلّ

    For you were my soul's wealth, gone along with riches;

so to me the states of plenty and scarcity are alike.

In whom can I find solace amid calamities and their onslaught?

Rare indeed is anyone but you who gives aid or solace.

And I was sorrowful after my family was gone; it was only

your place with me that made their absence easier to bear.

And I am indeed overcome, though I have the fortitude

to bear your loss; preoccupied, though I have no occupation.

And among the things that grieved me was that, at the hour of parting,

I stood sorrowful, unable to make anything bitter or sweet.

And I condemn patience without you, even its virtue,

out of grief, and count forbearance concerning you as folly.
