    For some reason I obeyed judgment on the side of folly,

    Though Juml had departed—and oh, what a Juml!

    Remaining on the dwellings’ rugged ground and plain,

    And how many a pang in their rugged ground and plain!

    طللتُ على إطلالهنَّ دمّ العذلِ

    Dwellings made the tears stream from my eyes;

    I spilled reproach’s blood upon their ruins.

    She walked among maidens free of passion,

    But she is a preoccupation for a heart otherwise unoccupied.

    Oh, how short the longest night in union with her!

    And how long-lived their promises and delays!

    فكم قتلت حيّاً وتحيي من القتلِ

    I am afflicted by eyes holding both languor and health;

    How many living souls they have slain, yet they revive them from death!

    Her glances are nothing but keen-edged swords,

    And the proof is the polish upon the faces.

    I swore to her truthfully by the wide eyes:

    Indeed, patience’s reach falls short before those wide eyes,

    And the slenderness of waists whose frailty causes wasting sickness,

    And the beauty of faces whose pride brings abasement.

    فطرفيَ في روضٍ وقلبيَ في محلِ

    I gathered beauty’s fruits through gazing and sorrow;

    So my eye is in a garden, while my heart is in drought.

    ويا راحتي لو كان في الأرض ما يسلي

    And Lamya has claimed that I have ceased to yearn for her;

    And what relief I would have, if anything on earth could console me!

    She is the full moon; I journey from it by night, in the light of its face,

    Then I stumble in the night of longing and madness.

    I have been wronged—is there a champion in a dominion

    Of beauty, where she need not fear being deposed?

    I spend the day with my heart fluttering, never still,

    For her whose earrings flutter and whose anklet is still.

    Unapproachable, she fears the guilt of shedding my blood,

    Yet she is not free of guilt for killing lovers.

    I marveled at her curves and her eyelids:

    At intoxication without wine, and [natural eye-darkness] without kohl.

    The lovesick lover’s tears adorn the side of her neck,

    As the branch’s neck is adorned with pearls of dew.

    وأين دموع الذلِّ من أدمع الدلِّ

    Whenever we meet, she feigns her tears;

    And how far tears of abasement are from tears of coquetry!

    These are not lingering glances that have joined forces

    Against my endurance, but archers outshooting arrows.

    And she whose judgments are unjust—why has she not learned

    From King al-Mansur the nature of justice?
