Blessed indeed, O son of al-Mubarak, is a town

whose souls and eyes enjoy your bounty.

You have ruled justly: Time’s face does not frown

upon it, nor is the hand of rain stingy.

You have filled the hearts of all people with awe,

and why not, when you have become a lion in his den?

There, its fragrance comes from the breaths of praise

for you, and praise’s secret is not kept hidden.

So glad tidings to a faith whose sky has you for its full moon!

Indeed, you have outshone the horizon’s full moon with your brow’s radiance.

And how paltry are the clouds’ milk-filled teats!

Indeed, your bounty has filled every right hand.

You shine before the army as a radiant sun,

unveiled amid dark clouds of battle-dust.

And you make clear the paths of generosity, until they are like

a gloom of doubt in a morning of certainty.

You uphold the delegation’s due while the age sits idle,

faithful to glory’s covenant, never treacherous.

When your qualities are passed round in rhyming verses

among us, then away with the daughter of the vine!

And if praise’s night-traveler goes astray in seeking anyone but you,

he journeys in a clear morning of your bounty.

And had you not been—may you ever remain—the central jewel of greatness,

the necklace of kingship would be of little worth.

So if I suffer what I have suffered through your absence

because a beloved is distant or a companion is away,

then may my heart taste no solace for anyone but you,

nor may my eyelids taste anything but sleeplessness.
