وذيand a possessor of ثروةٍwealth ماnot زالceased يرغبhe desires فيin الخناdepravity

And a man of wealth has never ceased to crave depravity,
and shuns the pursuit of noble deeds and praise.

He is a man who grows only baser,

عجبتُI marveled لكفَّيهِat his two palms وماand no بهماin them both ندّىmoisture; bounty

بليتُI was afflicted بممنونwith one scant in الندىbounty مقرِbitter in الوردdrinking-water

بأبلهَwith one more foolish منthan ضبٍa desert lizard وأجبنand more cowardly منthan طلىa fawn
وأبخلand stingier منthan كلبa dog وأقبحand uglier منthan قردa monkey
more foolish than a desert lizard, more cowardly than a fawn,
and stingier than a dog, and uglier than a monkey.

And you call him “master” in every circumstance,
but he refuses all but the ways of a slave.
