فقامته واللحظ رمحٌ ولهذمُ
And a haughty one—when he walks beneath his banner,
When he walks under his banner,
His stature is a spear, and his glance a keen blade.
His stance and gaze are a spear and a sword,
ولوand if لمnot تكنwere سحراًmagic سيوفthe swords جفونهِof his eyelids
ولو لم تكن سحراً سيوف جفونهِ

لما جرحت قلبي وفي خدّهِ الدم
And if the swords of his eyelids were not magic,
And if his eyelids' swords were not magic,
They would not have wounded my heart, while the blood is on his cheek.
They would not have wounded my heart, with blood on his cheek,
وأعجبُand more wondrous منهاthan them أنَّthat مرآةthe mirror وجههِof his face
وأعجبُ منها أنَّ مرآة وجههِ

أقابلها أبكي دماً وهي تبسم
And stranger than these is this: the mirror of his face—
And what amazes me more is that the mirror of his face,
I face it, weeping blood, while it smiles.
I face it crying blood while it smiles.
