وأدمعٌand tears فيin الهوىlove قامتcomplied بماwith what يجبُis required
A heart throbs at the memory of the protected abode after separation.
A heart that yearns for the abode of love though parted,
And tears in love have done what they must.
And tears of passion doing what must be done.

I wept on the day of parting from the clan at tidings
I wept when the beloved left, as per the news,
inscribed by a glance upon the pages of separation.
Inscribed in letters from the pages of separation.
هوىa passion هوىfell الدمعُthe tears منهُfrom it لوعةًanguish وجوىand burning grief
البَّlingered لمّاwhen خلاlay empty منof أهلهits people اللّبيبthe wise man
A passion from which tears fell in anguish and burning grief;
Passion, passion! My tears flowed in anguish,
the wise man lingered when it lay empty of its people.
When the beloved left, and the wise one was no more.
لاnot يعجبِmarvel الناسpeople منat ذلّيmy abasement وعزّهمand their glory
حكمُthe rule of الهوىlove فيover بنيهِits children كلّهُall of it عجبwonder
Let people not marvel at my abasement and their glory:
It does not surprise people, my humiliation and their glory.
love's rule over its children is wondrous throughout.
The ruling of passion over all its sons is but wonder.
يثنيhe bends ليثنيto turn aside فؤاديmy heart عنfrom عزيمتهits resolve
وراحَand began يظلمto wrong قلبيmy heart الظّلمُthe teeth's sheen والشّنبand their cool freshness
He sways to turn my heart from its resolve,
It makes my heart swerve from its resolve,
and the sheen and cool freshness of his teeth began to wrong my heart.
And oppression and injustice have come to wrong my heart.
تعلّمlearned البرقthe lightning وهناًlate at night منfrom ثغورهمِtheir mouths
فباتso it spent the night يبسمُsmiling منat وجديmy anguish وأنتحبand I sob
Late at night, lightning learned from their mouths,
Lightning learned weakness from their abodes,
so it spent the night smiling at my anguish while I sobbed.
So it started smiling through my love, and I complained.
أحبابناour beloveds ماnot نشدناwe sought الصبرَpatience بعدكمُafter you
ولاnor سلوناwe found solace وأثوابُand the garments of الصّباyouth قشبfresh and new
Our beloveds, we have not sought patience since you left,
Our loved ones, we did not seek patience after you,
nor found solace, while youth's garments are still new.
Nor did we ask, and the clothes of youth are now dry grass.
تحلوtaste sweet لديَّto me الأمانيhopes وهيand they are كاذبةُfalse
وفيand in حديثthe talk of الأمانيhopes يحسنbecomes lovely الكذبfalsehood
Hopes taste sweet to me, though they are false,
Vain hopes taste sweet to me though they are lies,
and in tales of hopes, falsehood becomes lovely.
And in talking of hopes, lies do nicely.
بنتمyou departed فماso there is no فيin هدوّrepose عندكمat your side طمعٌhope
كلاَّno indeed ولاnor فيin حياةٍlife بعدكمafter you أربdesire
You departed; there is no hope of repose at your side,
You are gone, so there is no more yearning for your affection,
no indeed, nor any desire for life after you.
No more, nor any life for me after you.
وأظلمand grew dark البعدُseparation فالأشواقand so the longings واضحةare clear
وفيand in ظلامthe darkness of اللياليthe nights تظهرَappear الشُّهبthe bright stars
Separation grew dark, and so the longings shone clear,
And absence has darkened, though yearning is clear,
and in the darkness of nights, the bright stars appear.
And shooting stars appear in the darkness of nights.
ضحكتمُyou laughed لبكائيat my weeping يومَon the day of بينكمُyour departure
ضحكَthe laughter of الأقاحيِّthe daisies إذwhen تبكيweep لهاfor them السّحبthe clouds
You laughed at my weeping on the day you parted,
You laughed at my tears when I was with you,
as daisies laugh when clouds weep for them.
Like the laughing of lightning when clouds weep for it.
تدنيbring near المنىhopes منكمof you ماwhat اليأسdespair يبعدهُkeeps it distant
مناfrom us ويحييand revives الرضاcontentment ماwhat يتلفتlooks about (perhaps 'destroys' intended) الغضبanger
Hopes bring near what, of you, despair keeps distant
Desires come near you, though despair distances them
from us; contentment revives what anger destroys [reading uncertain].
From us, and contentment brings to life what anger destroys.
لاتعجلواdo not hasten بفراقٍwith parting قبلbefore موقعهِits appointed time
لابدَّit is inevitable أنthat يستردَّreclaim الدهرtime ماwhat يهبit gives
Do not hasten a parting before its time:
Do not hasten with parting before its time,
time must reclaim what it gives.
Fate must reclaim what it grants.
لولاwere it not for القتلىthe slain ماnot حجبناwe were barred عنfrom ودادكمyour affection
إنَّindeed المودَّةaffection شيءٌa thing ليسis not يغتصبseized by force
Were it not for the slain, we would not have been barred from your affection.
Had it not been for the slain, we'd not be veiled from your friendship,
Indeed, affection is not something to be seized by force.
For affection is not something that can be seized by force.
عاقبتموناyou punished us ولاand no ذنبٌfault بهجركمُwith your abandonment
غيرُother than الهوىlove فإليكمso to you منكمfrom you الهربthe flight
You punished us with your abandonment, though we had no fault
You punished us though we had no fault in your abandonment,
but love; from you, it is to you we flee.
Save passion, so from you comes the flight to you.
سرىtravelled by night نسيمthe breeze of الصّباthe east wind يهديbringing تحيّتكمyour greeting
وهناًlate at night وللدمعand the tears have سيرٌa course كلهall of it خببa trot
The east wind's breeze travelled by night, bringing your greeting,
The morning breeze conveyed your greetings,
late at night, while the tears' whole course was a trot.
And languor, while tears flowed in streams.
فألحقَso ascribed الشّربُthe drinkers بالصهباءِto the tawny wine نفحتهُits fragrance
جهلاًignorantly وعنديand to my mind إليكمto you باتit spent the night ينتسبclaiming kinship
So the drinkers ascribed its fragrance to the tawny wine,
So it brought its breath to the slender, ignorantly,
ignorantly; to my mind, it spent the night claiming kinship with you.
While I, toward you, spent the night declaring my allegiance.

When it spoke, wafting fragrance, of your forms,
When it whispered about your cheek, they thought
they thought it the words of boughs and sand dunes.
It was the branches and shrubs speaking.
إشارةٌa gesture لطفتْwas subtle والبانُand the bān-tree يفهمهاunderstands it
عنكمfrom you فقدfor indeed هزَّstirred منsome of أعطافهits limbs الطربrapture
A subtle gesture, and the bān-tree understands it
A subtle gesture, beautiful, and Gazelles understand it
as coming from you; rapture has set its limbs swaying.
About you, so it shook their hips in rapture.

والخمرُand the wine تبرٌraw gold لهاit has منof لؤلؤٍpearl حببbubbles
And the water is silver, and the cup its jewel,
The water is of silver, and the cup's essence is gem,
and the wine is raw gold, with bubbles of pearl.
And the wine is pure pearls, intimate and dear.

إلاّexcept وقدhaving already حسبوهاthey thought it إنهاthat it was لهبflame
Red—they never sought refuge in water when it overflowed
The red wine they clung to when the flood raged,
without already believing it to be flame.
Foolishly thinking it was fire.

فدارةfor the halo of البدرthe full moon عزاًin glory عندهاbeside it كثبclose at hand
It sent greetings to a house where you have settled,
Peace to a house where you have lodged,
for the full moon's halo stands near it in glory.
For it has power and glory from you dwelling in it.

Every misfortune tossed me towards it;
Every misfortune has cast me there,
I swear, misfortunes have treated me well there.
By God, it was good to me during its turns.

The deserts and mounts are mine if I wish to depart,
For me are steeds and camels, if I want an abode,
and if I stay, I have Sayf al-Din and letters.
And if I stay, then religion, faith and discipline.
