The stirrings of longing came upon me at dawn,
At dawn longing overwhelmed me,
And the hands of passion tugged at my bonds,
And the hands of passion clutched my bonds.

At the voice of a calling dove, whose lament torments
From the voice of a wailing woman
My throbbing heart through the two jugular veins.
Who weeps in the valleys, piercing my fluttering heart.

She spent the night on a bough, exchanging laments with her sister,
She spent the night lamenting her sister,
After the cooing, with its yearning moan.
Thinking her necklace was her longing lover.

So I remembered my companions, already carried far away
So I remembered my camels when they strayed,
By noble desert camels; and they had announced their parting,
Lost in the barren wastes, departing forever.

With a cruelty that, at their farewell, plucks out
When we parted they tore a heart from me,
A heart consoled in compassion's hand.
Ill and in the grip of sorrow.

O she-camel, on the day their parting drew near, my soul
O camel of my soul, when they left
Was held by sighing at my eyes.
My sighs halted, stuck in my throat.
