    Our garden’s nightingales rose early,

    singing on the tender bough,

and lamenting out of pity for

    the lovesick, with sobbing cries.

    So they stir bygone love

within me, and remind me of my beloved.

Alas for the one toyed with

    by their songs after sunset.

Their little warbler perched high upon

a bough of the arak tree, like a preacher.

O little warbler of melodies, you have

    left my heart throbbing,

and left me with sore eyelids,

yet you do not know what ails me.

Remembrance of my beloved assails me,

    so I utter a stranger’s lament.

I have found nothing but misery

since he left, and a wasting sickness that melts me,

and yearnings that all night assailed

me, with no one to answer me.

I wrestled with them until morning,

while tears from my eye poured down.
