O distant one, for whom hearts are homes,

far from a yearning lover whom remembrance stirs,

accept a greeting of sincere affection,

in whose light the flowers have shone.

No gardens, where with Quss's eloquence

birds sing above the boughs of their great trees,

and which are graced with al-Shihr's ambergris and tawny

musk, wafted by the hours before dawn,

are ever, in the season of spring, more fragrant

than this greeting, whose scent perfumes the wastes.

Then the lover declares his intense longing,

too great for messages to convey.

So may there one day return, through meeting

you, joyful celebrations—and may wishes be fulfilled.
