منfrom الروضthe meadow انفاسthe breaths الربيعof spring النوافحfragrant
Indeed, they brought us glad tidings of a new beginning and freshness—
You have brought us glad tidings of a renewed life,
the fragrant breaths of spring from the meadow.
From the meadow, the breaths of spring breeze blow,
فسِرناso we set out وقضبwhile the shoots الواديينof the two valleys نواضِرverdant
نمتهاnourished them سوارٍnight-roaming rainclouds للعشاياin the evenings نواضحpouring rain
So we set out, while the shoots of the two valleys were verdant,
So we walked while the valleys’ twigs blossomed,
nourished by night-roaming clouds pouring rain in the evenings.
Growing bracelets for the forearms clearly show,
ترامىbore onward بناwith us والعيشwhile life فيناwithin us اخضرٌgreen
علىacross صفحاتthe expanses الروضof the meadow تلكthose المسارحroaming grounds
They bore us onward, with life green within us—
Life in us turns green and stretches far,
those roaming grounds across the meadow’s expanses.
On the meadow’s pages, those theatres,
فظلْناso we lingered وحنّانwhile the plaintive voice النواعيرof the waterwheels شاحبٌwan
يُرنُrings out جوىheartache والحوضand the basin مَلآنfull طافحoverflowing
So we lingered, while the waterwheels’ wan, plaintive voice
We stayed while the fountains’ ardour paled,
rang with heartache, and the basin was full, overflowing.
Humming spring, and the pond brimming overflows,
نقاربwe shorten فيهاthere الخطوour steps والدوحُwhile the great trees عاكفٌbend over
ونجنيand we gather قطوفfruits الزهوof splendor والزهرwhile the flowers فائحwaft fragrance
We took short steps there, while the great trees bent over,
We draw near it with measured steps, and the bower is rapt,
and gathered fruits of splendor, while the flowers wafted fragrance.
And we pluck bunches of flowers and fragrant bloom,
ونألفand we cherish منهاfrom them الغَضَّthe tender growth والظِلُّwhile the shade وارفspreads wide
علىover أرضهاtheir ground الميثاءِsoft and level والنهرwhile the river سارحroams freely
And we cherished their tender growth, while the shade spread wide
And we make of it green, shade, and thickets,
over their soft earth, while the river roamed freely.
On its fertile land, and the river meandering flows,
ونبتكرand we begin early اللّذاتِthe pleasures والجوُّwhile the sky أدْكَنٌdusky
بسفكby shedding دمthe blood الراووقof the wine-strainer والزِقwhile the wineskin ناضحdrips
And we began our pleasures early, while the sky was dusky,
We create pleasures, and the air grows darker,
by shedding the wine-strainer’s blood, while the wineskin dripped.
With the blood of hunted game and prey gushing flows,
ونُصغيand we listen attentively لتَرنامto the melody اليراعof the reed flute مُوَقعاًrhythmically played
علىin time with شدواتthe songs الطيرof the birds والطلُّwhile the dew راشحtrickles
And we listened to the reed flute’s rhythmic song,
And we listen to the commotion of the stags,
in time with the birds’ melodies, while the dew trickled.
To the songs of birds and the far call echoes,
وللعودand for the lute منin صوتِthe voice القِيانof the female singers مساجلa rival in song
وللزِّيرand for the treble string منin شدوthe singing الحمامof the doves مطارحa partner in song
And the lute had a rival in the singing women’s voices,
To the lute answering the reed pipe’s voice,
and the treble string a partner in the doves’ song.
And the voice of doves to the turtle dove responds,
فذاso here is ساقُsāq (dove-name element) حرٍّḥurr (dove-name element) فوقatop ساقٍa branch مغرَدٌsinging

So here a sāq-ḥurr dove sings atop a branch;
Conversing with a moonlike gazelle sadly cries,
a turtledove coos back to it, lamenting on the bank.
And there a son of Warka alone on the branch,
وهذاand this one ابْنson ورقاءٍof a gray dove علىon الغصنthe branch مفردٌalone
لعوبplayful بأطرافwith the fringes الأهازيجof melodies صادحsinging aloud
And here a gray dove’s son is alone upon a branch,
Playing with the edge of the streams loudly laughs,
playing with the fringes of melodies, singing aloud.
And an Iraqi there finding fresh dewberry,
وذاكand that one عراقيٌan Iraqi bird منamong الدُبْسthe dusky doves واجدٌgrief-stricken
عزيزُintense اسىًin sorrow عمّاover what تُجنُّconceal الجوانحthe ribs
And that is an Iraqi of the dusky doves, grief-stricken,
Dear morsel from what makes the wings flutter,
intense in sorrow over what the ribs conceal.
Doves on the branch of Arak wood paired,
جوارٍmaidens علىon قضيبa twig الأراكof the arak tree تناوحتlamented to one another
وماand not هيthey إِلاّexcept للقلوبto hearts جوارحwounders
Maidens on an arak twig lamented to one another,
Yet for hearts they are but meaning’s fleshrippers.
and they are nothing but wounders of hearts.
