Indeed, the poetry of Prince Badr al-Ma‘ali,

generosity’s brother and peerless among men,

sets us in a garden, beside a pool,

with wine from Karkh and a northern breeze.

It never loses its closely woven texture,

commanding every kind of lawful magic.

    Delicacy with vigor, in harmony—

hearts sipped it as they sip pure water.

The happy inspirations of his eminence acclaimed my name,

and so clothed it in the striped robes of that beauty,

and lent it the beauty of epithets of praise—

though his own eminence more deserves that perfection in return—

in verse that left my inmost mind lost

between the water of reason and the pearls of speech.

And his radiant words marked me with excellence,

fully; then it appeared to me in imagination:

it is indeed the remnant of a cup of bounty he sipped

    as medicine—and my hopes rejoiced.
