لاتني في وضع شَكْل الرَقمِ

واقرع الرقَّ بسنِ القَلَمِ

واقرع الرقَّ بسنِ القَلَمِ

Do not slacken in setting down the form of the script;

Put me in the shape of a number

and strike the parchment with the pen’s tooth.

And knock the thinness with the tooth of a pen

واجتهد فيه تراه عُدَّةً

واجتهد فيه تراه عُدَّةً

قبل أن تقرع سنَّ النَّدمِ

قبل أن تقرع سنَّ النَّدمِ

And strive at it—you will find it a resource,

And strive in it, you will find it a tool

before you gnash the tooth of regret.
