بضاعةُ بئر بالمدينةِ قد حكى

بضاعةُ بئر بالمدينةِ قد حكى

بها المطرزيَّ الكسر لا غير فاعرفِ

بها المطرزيَّ الكسر لا غير فاعرفِ

Buḍāʿa is a well in Medina; it has been reported

The goods of the well in the city have told

by al-Muṭarrizī that its name takes only kasra (i)—so know this.

Of it, Al-Muṭarrizī broke the decline and naught else, so know

وأشهرُ من ذا الضمّ فيها ولو درى

وأشهرُ من ذا الضمّ فيها ولو درى

لقالَ كما قالته أخوةُ يوسفِ

لقالَ كما قالته أخوةُ يوسفِ

Yet ḍamma (u) is better known for it than this; had he known,

And it is more famous with the inclusion in it, and if he knew

he would have said what Joseph’s brothers said.

He would have said it as the brothers of Joseph said.
