ولماand when تفاوَضْناwe exchanged الحديثَthe conversation وأقبلتْand she approached
عَليَّtoward me بِعَتْبٍwith reproach لاno أبالَكَfather for you منof عَتْبreproach
And when we exchanged words and she turned
When we conversed and you turned to me
To me with reproach—may you have no father!—what reproach,
With reproach, though reproach matters not to me,
هصرتُI bent down بأغصانِwith the boughs المنىhopes منfrom حديثهاher words
وقمتand I rose صريعfelled by العَتْبreproach أزهوI vaunt علىover الشَرْبthe drinkers
I drew down the boughs of hope from her words,
I was enthralled by her conversation’s branches,
And rose, felled by reproach, vaunting over the drinkers.
And I rose conquered by reproach, exultant with drink,
تناولنيshe offers me الاشفاقcompassion مزجاًmingled بقسوةwith harshness
وتفترand she smiles أحياناًsometimes عنto reveal الباردthe cool العذبthe sweet
She offers me compassion mingled with harshness,
Compassion took me, mingled with harshness,
And sometimes smiles, revealing what is cool and sweet,
And at times she would relax from the cold and fresh.
لترمزso she may hint أنيthat I فيin الهوىlove ملءthe fullness of عينهاher eye
وتظهرand she shows للواشينto the talebearers فيin سلمهاher peace حربيwar with me
To hint that, in love, I fill her eye,
To hint that in love I am the apple of her eye,
And amid her peace shows the talebearers war with me.
Yet to onlookers in her ladder she shows hostility.

May I be your ransom! I would not choose loving you as my creed
I ransom you - I do not choose your love as doctrine,
If I were not steadfast through earnestness and play.
If I am not steadfast in play and earnestness,

So if you sever ties, willingly or unwillingly, and I am not
So if you spurn me, willingly and unwillingly, and I am not
In distress over you, may I not be called a lover.
Toward you in any state, I would not be called loving,

How, then, when I have seen signs from you?
How so, when I saw coquetry from you,
