And a freshly picked carnation reveals

A rosebud smiles at you, emanating

To you, with a smile, the fragrance it wafts,

A fragrance as it blossoms with delight

Above stems—as though, from the ewers

Above a market that resembles vessels

Of heady wine, they were spouts for the vintage.

Of hot desire pouring out the wine

The cupbearers laid cheeks upon them,

The water-carriers have covered over it

Bleeding from them, in place of the wine-strainer.

Cheeks that take the place of sacrificial lambs
