    مُعَمَّمةٍ بالنَّبْتِ مُنْسَابة الغُدْر

    Ah, would that we were in a garden on Qasioun,

    Crowned with greenery, its pools flowing;

    And would that we had some business there during our night's stay,

    That would excuse our pursuit of revelry,

    وربَّ كمنجاة يَرِنُّ إلى الفَجْر

    With a singer, an oud player, and a drummer,

    And a kamanja player whose music rings until dawn;

    And our birds singing above the boughs,

    And our night of fellowship the night of a lifetime.

    But if this and that and this cannot be,

    Then nothing remains but to be consoled by remembrance.

    So, how lovely youth's bloom, now bid farewell!

    And oh, how lovely the age of youth—what an age!
