May the rain greet a ruined dwelling in Erbil,
He lived a good life in a homeland studied by Erbil
The vicissitudes of time have laid it waste.
The events of time have sighed over it

وخَلَت مراتعهُ من الآرام
Its springtime haunts lie deserted; its fellowship has grown forlorn,
Its squares have been populated and its company has been lonely
And its pastures are empty of gazelles.

Dispersion concerned itself with its people, and they scattered,

If a tribe has been touched by the hands of affliction
Its haunts erased, its landmarks effaced,
May the covenants spare the studied flags

Yet how often I fulfilled there the desires of youth,
So I have spent with it my mornings of youth
With noble young men, their noses held proudly high.
With young men, proud and of high lineage
